...Is Beatport trolling?
Okay so Beatport has this album by Pluto (R. richards) called "This is the only world"... all of the albums songs have been listed by Beatport as Dubstep.
First of all the album is from 1993, obviously far older than any dubstep song ever. Secondly, if you listen to the album all of the songs are reggae (Beatport has a "dub/reggae" genre) or something along those lines :P
wtf Beatport....

Well I think Skrillex winning 'Drum & Bass' track of the year in the Beatport awards with a track that's apparently 117bpm says it all about Beatport! I think they are pretty out of touch with the UK scene, but they are based state-side so to be expected...
I stopped buying anything from them a long time ago, would rather support the likes of Surus, Chemical and RedEye to name a few!

Exactly. Beatport is adequate for Techno and House releases (adequate = the selection and exclusives...complete bullshit on the pricing of WAVS and exclusives though), I wouldnt shop there for the life of me for anything else. Digital Tunes knows whats up when it comes to dubstep.
Re: ...Is Beatport trolling?
Hey, high quality tunes though, i remember the first day i went on to Beatport, it was the exact same day Scary Monsters just came out and it was all over the charts.

I found a way to get piece of mind for years and left the hell alone, turn a deaf ear to the cellular phone
Re: ...Is Beatport trolling?
I only shop at Sheetport if its not at Boomkat. Boomkat is 99p for a single track or if you buy the whole EP/Album/Release it works out even less than 99p per track. Like £1.95 for a 3 track release etc.

Re: ...Is Beatport trolling?
Everyone I know who works for Beatport is based in Berlin? I think perhaps it caters towards the biggest market though (US).phytone wrote:Well I think Skrillex winning 'Drum & Bass' track of the year in the Beatport awards with a track that's apparently 117bpm says it all about Beatport! And Skrillex is dnb, agree with Beatport on that.

only comment of yours that ever made me make that face
Re: ...Is Beatport trolling?
I just found this site recommended to me called digital-tunes
It's sweet
Don't use Beatport unless you have to, the overpricing of WAVs is ridiculous

Let me explain.Today wrote:pete bubonic wrote: And Skrillex is dnb, agree with Beatport on that.![]()
only comment of yours that ever made me make that face
I never have personally understood the fascination and obsessive declarations from some of the importance (to the point of it being the be all and end all) of BPM to classification. I know I'm almost directly contradicting (and probably wrongly) a Dr. Kode Nine MBE quote (I think he said it had to be 140 bpm or something similar). But other qualities of the music define the classification to me. Rhythms, patterns, melodic styles, instruments/sounds used, ideology and so on. That's why (in my mind) there is a division between Jungle and Drum and Bass, largely the same tempo, but varying in sound sets and attitude to construction. Why UKG and Grime are different. Why Uk Funky and House are different. etc.
With this in mind, if you cast your mind back about 6/7 years (ish) back and the combined sounds of Pendulum, Noisia, Full Cycle, Clipz and alike were already developing a sound where emphasis was on the synthesis, lots of different gnarly synth noises, less focus on the drum patterns and rhythmic variation, a lot of the time the melodic elements took a back seat to the actual growl and bite of the different synth noises (or in Pendulum and Clipse's case, the melody was reduced to nursery rhyme level). This sound, with it's noise wall approach to production, harks much closer to these DnB sounds than any Dubstep that preceeded beats made by Doctor P, Trolley Snatcha, Skrillex and so on. I'd be hard pushed to say that beats like Scary Monsters, Sweet Shop and so on could really claim any significant evolutionary heritage from beats like Anti-War Dub, HorroShow, Root, Roll With the Punches, Quwalli (beats I hope we can aggree on were classic and informative Dubstep pieces).
So to my ears and mind, I can only relate those sounds such as Skrillex as closer to DnB than it ever was to Dubstep. It's certainly not a popular viewpoint and with half the world saying Skrillex is Dubstep, who am I to disagree?! I also completely missed Tech and Tweak house, to which this sound owes a lot I believe, but I can only reference things I am involved with.
So in summation, yeah I reckon Beatport is right with Skrillex sounding more like DnB than anything I knew/know as Dubstep. Hope that's a decent explanation.
