Wouldnt it be nice for there to be an EL-B Ghost Trax CD

Post by owengriffiths » Sat Jul 14, 2007 1:56 pm

EL-B is rightly considered to be a legend but a lot of this mystique is down to the fact that the Ghost Trax tunes were so rare. Some of the EL-B remixes like Celebrate Life were minor hits, and Groove Chronicles were widely respected in garage.

When I was listening to Garage in 2000-2 I heard a fair amount of the high profile mixes he done, but Ghost Trax (and to a lesser extent Horsepower) was almost entirely off the spectrum, on virtually no compilations (I own at least 20 from that era), presumably hardly any tape packs, and once on one of the few times I taped pirate stations when I was on holiday.

To my knowledge only the following EL-B/Ghost crew productions ended up on CDs: 2000, Bison, Buck & Bury, breakbeat science, Cuba, Express, Summervybes (on a tapepack).

Think of all the countless 12's and dubplates that so few people have heard. I reckon a double CD a la Skull disco is called for.

Why couldnt it happen though. It's not as if they have to be released on vinyl or anything. A CD isnt too much of a financial risk.

It just irritates me a bit that people bang on about the brilliance of early producers like this, and yet even someone who was really committed to Garage at the time, is effectively deprived of hearing their stuff. At least Horsepower did the In Fine Style album (even though the distro was crap at the time)

this would be sick, and im sure ppl would be all over it. i can just imagine a crisp black cd with just a small Ghost logo on the front!

it needs someone willing to put in the time and effort though, which i guess is the problem...

I thought loads of the early singles were up as mp3's on dubplate.net

Would be nice to acquaint people with the sound - Benny Ill caned loads of these the other month at Corsica. Love to see some reissues like they do with the Groove Chronicles stuff from time to time

Release a greatest hits to get people acquainted and then hit them with the new tunes I reckon.
Hmm....

I couldnt be more in support of this, I know (pretty much) nothing of early dubstep, and aint got a clue where to start in all honesty. Bought the roots of dubstep CD, but thats about it!

Ive got the EL-B guest slot on Hatcha's kiss show if anyone wants it uploaded, but it's a drop in the ocean in terms of the entire Ghost crew catalogue (and it would hurt the commercial success of a potential CD :P )

I heard a brilliant EL-B track at Fwd when Benny Ill was warming up in February, and it's been buzzing around my head since then. That tune alone was the pinnacle of EL-B as far as I'm concerned, it was like he had finally earned all the accolades people had given him over the years

Essential Direct has a lot from the Ghost catalogue available for download at: http://www.mp3toburn.com

Also, there's a Groove Chronicles shop where you can buy mp3s or get the tracks on CDR: http://www.groovechronicles.net/motor/storeindex.htm

A CD compilation would be nice, though.

Well - suppose that is normal given they were swimming against the stream in dem days.

I agree it would be cool to have a CD - their music is something which just gets better with time really. IMHO it is lesson for all of us - at the time they were largely ignored but it is they who are now more relevant than ever. Can't say better than that. Respect.
