Mastering tutorial: what it can do, what it can't do
Jake Perrine, Ableton Live Certified Trainer, and author of Sound Design, Mixing and Mastering in Ableton Live, teaches us about Mastering our music. What is it capable of? What can't it do? What is it? What is it not? Demystification. Enjoy!
Jake is also doing a 4 week long, intensive "Mixing and Mastering in Ableton Live" web course. More info on that here: http://vespers.ca/shop/lessons-and-work ... eton-live/

This video will hopefully clear some minds of what mastering is for and that it can't just magically turn you into Skrillex. Thanks.

Rightly said. Nothing can make up for a bad mixdown and sub-par production. Cheers!ChadDub wrote:This video will hopefully clear some minds of what mastering is for and that it can't just magically turn you into Skrillex. Thanks.

Most of the people who've signed up (and quite a few have, we're almost at full enrollment) are producers who are serious about their music, looking to build careers, and want to up their game. For them, it's a reasonable investment. Not for everyone. All the best.dubesteppe wrote:who in the right mind would fucking pay $400 for your course

I'm going to be that guy that points out that Bob Katz's book is all right but is really one man's experience of mastering and covers a lot of stuff which is not massively relevant to dubstep artists looking for a way to get the best sound of their music and spends a lot of time selling his favourite (and his own) products.deadly habit wrote:save some money and pick up katz book on the subject

I actually think The Mastering Engineers handbook is better as it covers a wider mastering experience.

Re: Mastering tutorial: what it can do, what it can't do
if you want to learn mastering it shouldn't be for one specific genre or your own music, it should be for working on others material
you should learn how to mix for that, there is a massive difference between a mixing engineer and a mastering engineer
though many people on here seem to interchange those terms
then again a lot of people on here seem to insist on mixing and mastering their own stuff, and on the same set of speakers in a poorly treated room
reminds me why i don't come here that much anymore heh

Re: Mastering tutorial: what it can do, what it can't do
Very true, you can not master your own tracks if you don't have the monitors or the room for it, simple as that. People should focus on mixing not on mastering, the better your mix, the better the master.deadly habit wrote:if you want to learn mastering it shouldn't be for one specific genre or your own music, it should be for working on others material

Re: Mastering tutorial: what it can do, what it can't do
I agree i would much rather do a online course on mixing but if i had the spondoly i would most definitely spend it on this course.
