When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback...
Do you REALLY want feedback, as in you will listen to what your pal says and will potentially change your track based on what he says, or are you just sending it to him wanting him to say how good it is so you can continue pushing through making the track? I'm guilty of the latter. I don't give a fuck about the detail of what you think is up with it, I just want you to tell me how good it is so I can feel like I'm doing something worth doing.

Honest feedback is the only thing I want. I'd prefer someone to tell me something isn't good, because it gives you impetus to try harder. But take it with a grain of salt, opinions are totally subjective most of the time, unless it's a purely technical and unassailable fact....like, your sub is hitting at 90hz
Re: When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback..
got to a point that I'm pretty satisfied / auto critical about my tracks. I just send to people who will actually enjoy listening to it and expect them to send me back some good tracks.

Re: When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback..
Yeah I'll just send some of my close friends the soundcloud link, they'll say they liked it, we'll talk about it for a few minutes, and then the conversation will move elsewhere.

none of my friends like anything remotely close to what I enjoy making, so they generally never hear them unless I directly get asked about it

I don't know chad, but I'll tell you this: It's a known thing that people of our generation(the millennial) and younger, need the external affirmation/acknowledgement more than previous generations. I guess that's why 'they' say that we should produce music only for ourselves, b/c it makes us happy. But I can't say that I don't feel ya, and honestly know where you're coming from. It's like unless the external affirmation isn't there, you're not usually inspired to continue. At the end of the day, I'd just say to not be in your head/make yourself feel guilty about it. That does no good, and doesn't help push yourself forward.
A cure-all for this kind of thing, which is what I learned from that video you posted earlier with Joe Rogan, is to surround yourself with like minded people...and in person, of course. Internet forums don't quite get it.
And none of this is new to you...Shit, I'd say that if people were more honest instead of following the pack trying to sound all righteous, we'd have a lot less threads turning into debates/calling people out, and instead keep pushing the music. One of the most quality threads I've seen in a long time was, "The Reese Bass Thread". So many people posting their work, fearlessly. LOVED IT

Re: When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback..
When i send tracks to friends, I tell them to tear them to shreds. Even if they aren't producing the same thing as me, they can still give good feedback on the mix, what melodies do/don't work, etc...

Some of my friends enjoy the shit I make, so I send it to them.

Re: When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback..
If they ask, I let them listen - but I'm still self concious about people listening to my tracks whilst I'm in the room, it's why I like the anonymity of forums and SoundCloud. Most of the time they'll be pretty positive about my stuff however I know it's most probably because I've made it. I've never gone to someone irl and said "Here listen to this, gimme some feedback" mainly because I don't know anyone who could give me some viable technical criticisms or improvements.
Re: When you send a track to a friend and ask for feedback..
Beautifully said, and why would you want someone to say it's good, when really their thinking, hey if you do this the track could really improve, or this just aint my thing, either way is better than "yea man track is nice" when really they barely listened because they don't enjoy it.deadly habit wrote:i send tracks to people i know will be honest, brutal, and actually give feedback (and who know their production shit)
