Making Use Of What You Have

Post by JoeOsoDopke » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:33 pm

Let me know what you think. I am simply using a Yamaha Clavinova (which I'm sure isn't designed for what I just did)
Excuse the first minute of me getting my sounds all sorted out.

it was designed to make music. the mark of a good instrument is versatility.

sometimes i like to strip back my equipment and just see what i can do with old shit. it's fun and wacky and can sound really cool. i have an electribe ES-1 that's perfect for jamming. sometimes i fire up rebirth just to see if i can still make it do new things.

If it has the sounds in there, then it was definitely meant to do it. You basically just made your keyboard a drum machine. Personally I find the drumpads on a drum machine easier to use over a keyboard but they both work just as well.

Hell having that Clavinova kinda puts you ahead of the game for some people like me that have nothing but a copy of FL, some random free software and a mouse and keyboard. Well, I do have an oxygen25 but as I don't play much piano or anything I don't really use it as it was probably intended. Although as of late I've become a lot more sample oriented and using synths more as a compliment to that. Good stuff though.

I appreciate the complements!
The Clavinova isn't too powerful in terms of it's effects engine or really even some of the sounds it offers. I mean it is a somewhat old model (my parents purchased it a while ago) but the piano works man! I can achieve some interesting sounds by adjusting different parameters like brightness or resonance. But really I think it's more of a machine for playing floppys, and some performance/recording. The piano sounds are fantastic (as expected) and since the keys are weighted, it gives it a much more natural feel.
And on the topic of working with what you have...
Just because an artist uses this specific synth or that particular plugin, does NOT mean that you need to go out and purchase it. I have seen so many people just go out and waste their money on different things, only to end up in the same hole that they started in. It's really the person behind the gear.
