808 sub bass

Post by squiggles » Wed May 09, 2012 6:05 pm

Hey guys,

I did a quick search for this but to no avail... if there's a thread I apologize, but here I go.

I really really like the bass in this track
For ages I've thought that the bottom was just a pitched 808, but I've been trying to do it in ableton by putting an 808 sample in a sampler and tuning it... but its too short, too clicky, its not even dynamics wise (compression only squashes the initial part which is what makes it distinctive.) Any suggestions?

Load a 808 kick, isolate a single cycle of the waveform and cut it out and loop it and tune it. That's how you get '808 bass'. But I think it's pretty pointless. Just load up a sinewave and tune it low, done. For this sound, you'd either like to use a dirty squarewave, tune it down and modulate the cut-off of a low-pass filter OR distort a sinewave and again, lowpass filter, modulation, etc.

for clicks adjust your attack
also there is a wide range of 808 samples of just the kick variations, so do yourself a favor and buy this http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/tape808.html

Don't really know what you mean but it isn't a 808 kick pitched up. It's just a synth afai can hear.

He's using a standard 808 kick for bass, the click comes from not single-cycle sampling a sine out of it.

Deadly, this is the production section of the DSF, where simple solutions to simple problems don't occur.

Being condescending doesn't help anyone with production either. Dude's asking a question and probably didn't know what 808 bass was exactly and I'm guessing he is relatively new at production. Let's not be dicks about it.

forget samples
TS-808 free vst
it thumps hard
I`ve got the Goldbaby 808 pack but I still use the 808 sub kick from the TS.
You can adjust the envelope to drop the kick, change pitch, etc.

Like deadly said, it's just a pitch envelope. An 808 kick is just a minimally processed sinewave with a pitch envelope on thurr. That's also what pitches the bass in your example.
