More Turntable Questions..

Post by Figment » Mon May 14, 2012 9:48 am

Easy Guys,

in the next month or so i'm turning 21, plan to ask the parents too help me get a pair of turntables..

now i'm aware on a few things, Technics are the one, preferably SL1200/1210 MK2/MK5 if i'm correct.

Also aware that they are now discontinued, and i'm struggling to find any stock in australia, so my options are down too going into shops or buying second hand in australia through any means (prefer not too ship from overseas as couriers are generally shit, but i believe anything from overseas will generally be loved turntables etc)

IF it comes to the stage where getting a pair of Technics is too difficult, seems dodgy/overpriced etc etc

is there another make of turntable on the market at the moment, that would be considered next best? or good enough?

generally i would be using them to practice mixing at home, standard stuff, maybe record sets.

If anyone has any info it would be appreciated greatly. :Q:

Tbh, I have a shitty pair of homemix belt drives and they work perfectly. Only problem is that when you play on 12010's you have to change your mixing style considerably
And how will you inquire into a thing when you are wholly ignorant of what it is? Even if you happen to bump right into it, how will you know it is the thing you didn't know?

i guess that's the point in this topic.. for day-to-day use practicing, mixing to myself, MAYBE the odd recording, is having a highly rated make/brand of turntables essential?

eventually i do plan to mix on wax at clubs etc (but if i can even do that, i would hope that the venues would take care of the turntables)

i've never mixed on turntables before, so it will all be a learning curb.. so this question might be better fitted, belt driven, or direct drive?

all the specs and stuff i'll research myself, but i thought asking a forum of people who live with a passion for vinyl, mixing vinyl etc, i thought i'd get a better response coming too people who know their shit :Q:

cheers, once more.

IIRC grillis uses tt's that aren't technics and his mixing is tight, might be worth asking what he's got?

I bought them shitty belt drives having never mixed before. I can now use pretty much any type of turntable. Once you have the basic beatmatching down it's really just about knowing a little bit about the turntable your about to use. For example, a lot of 1210's need to be set at +2 to spin records at the correct speed (i think). Like I said before, just need to switch up your mixing style slightly but it's nothing major. In the long run it will save you a hell of a lot of money.

yeah, originally when i decided it was time to get turntables, i was going to start lower then after a bit of time i think it's appropriate too upgrade, i would go up and get technics..

but i think i've decided it is maybe just a better idea to get Technics now, in case it gets harder as time goes on, if i can't get them at a good price etc, i'll live, just think it's probably a smarter decision to just get them straight up.

Just get some technics imo, buy them second hand and you'll be able to sell them for what you bought them for if you ever get bored. A new numark starter kit will cost you about £200-£250 at least over here, but second hand technics you can find for about £350 - it's a no brainer when you factor in re-sale value, quality etc.

Have you tried looking at ebay/gumtree?

When buying second hand this is a good guide;

PS. BTW the only DJ turntable (well was not originally designed as such, but still) Technics make AFAIK is the 1210/1200, the others are hifi style.

Firstly, any direct drive turntables will be a good starting point. I got a pair of Citronic PD-40s (I think thats what they were) for £50 off my friend and it was a good for awhile! Moved to Technics though and it was a much more pleasant experience. I'd suggest going straight into getting Technics if you can afford it, if you are tight for cash though...don't worry too much at first, just get a mixer and turntables and have some fun. :) Spend the rest of the dosh on the black crack.

Grillis kills it on his Stantons, so they are definitely an option and he is an Aussie too, so they must be available somewhere? :D

respect too you all, been a serious help.

i'll watch that video about 2nd hand purchases, but yeah, i'll look around for for others like Stanton t.80's if i can't seem to find a pair of technics :)

it's not the be all and end all though, if i don't get them now, i'll get them later, nothing wrong with 4 turntable mixes ;)
