So Egypt and Muslim Brotherhood: Hate to say I told you so..
Disclaimer: as much as I say I told you so I'm just being my normal prick self and sticking to posting style. In all honesty I'd really like to discuss what could potentially be a VERY VERY chaotic situation in Egypt and could create a VERY volatile country and a possibly Insanely violent version of last years revolution. This could have international implications for us all.
So let's revisit the Egyptian revolution. I caught madddd shit for saying that despite the fact the Muslim brotherhood stating they had no interest in controlling the country, I insisted that they were dead set on imposing Shari law.
Fast forward to today: the prime presidential run off consists of a Muslim brotherhood hardliner dead set on. Making Egypt a Muslim state under sharia law (despite over 10 million non Muslims living in Egypt).
So yeah plan B seems the obvious choice right? Except plan b.... Yeah he's an ex Air Force Commander and Mubarak's final prime minister, running on the platform that the military will restore order in Egypt within 24 hours of him taking power. So yeah.... Plan A seems the lesser of two evils if you're anti Mubarak????
This was what I meant when I said that the Muslim brotherhood disrupts things and causes chaos to put then in a position of power.... But even my pessimistic conspiracy theorist mindset never thought they stood a chance of taking the presidency.

Yeah - I really thought/think that Egypt is/was to sophisticated to let a reactionary group come to power...
I mean - the people over there were seeking more freedoms/inclusion into the workings of their country...finances
Hate to say it - but they are probably better off trying to work with Mubaraks people...for the time being at least
Maybe - under the new pressures - they will try to address the peoples issues more....I don't know...

You live in a country where the people pride themselves for being free by keeping gay people from getting married. People have weird views on what constitutes 'more freedom'.bright maroon wrote:Yeah - I really thought/think that Egypt is/was to sophisticated to let a reactionary group come to power...

There are alot of born again country bumpkins for christ here without a doubt...
but to say that the entire country is about priding themselves on that - would be...weird
I do find myself shocked and surprized everyday though...
with these bizarro attitudes that present - I didn't even think could exist in this day and age...

Well not all people obviously. I'm just saying, there's just a lot of people out there who's idea of freedom is limiting other people's freedom.bright maroon wrote:There are alot of born again country bumpkins for christ here without a doubt...

Seriously guys break this down to it's absolute roots. Our age group should be very concerned. This election could effect our lives indirectly for the next few decades.
Though Egypt did not start the Arab spring, they were the poster children for it. In Egypt, it was a revolution against the heavy handed Mubarak regime filled with military goons. It was a revolution of men, women, and a HUGE progressive youth movement. They overthrew this corrupt regime and out come the wolves.
Now, a year and a half later due to the meddling of Iran/Syria/etc through the Muslim brotherhood, the current options are
A A representative of TMB, which would impose Sharia law, going against the progressive, youth drive , sexually equal, religiously irrelevant revolution. It goes against everything they fought for
B A representative who is cut from the same cloth as Mubarak. Except he was cut from the portion of the cloth who thinks the military is the answer to everything. His actual belief is that if he is elected, under his control, the military will have the country back in a peaceful state. THE MILITARY. This is exactly what they revolted against
This is the type of chaos Iran and Syria use the Muslim brotherhood for. If Egypt goes back in to chaos how soon does Syria level Homs completely and push 100,000 refugees into Lebanon? How soon does the west forget about the human rights violations going on in Iran?
This is the type of trouble I was preaching about concerning The Muslim Brotherhood.
What option do the youth if Egypt have? Think about someone your age living in Egypt... What do you do?
This is insanity

Assassinate them
which is probably what it would come down to - more violence/uprising
I certainly never thought it would be as 'easy' as it was, it will go on for years most likely.

I'd get the fuck out of there asap. Such a shame they all wasted their time fighting for nothing.

The other beautiful madness in all this is that Mubarak and Israel played nice for financial gains. A TMB regime would likely jeaprodize the 1979 treaty and would likely create a new avenue for anti-Israeli attacks that had been tame durIng the banishment of the Muslim brotherhood

Bro you totally told me so.
Re: So Egypt and Muslim Brotherhood: Hate to say I told you
the main outside meddling in the middle east is by the USA (or the west generally), to which fundamentalism (e.g. the muslim bros) is a reaction.pkay wrote:due to the meddling of Iran/Syria/etc through the Muslim brotherhood
we should BACK THE FUCK OFF.
but agreed that right now it looks pretty fucked.

The Muslim brotherhood in it's current form was developed because of british rule in egypt in the 30's.
The US's main interest in Egypt has namely been safe tourism and keeping shit peaceful with Egypt and Israel.
Iran/Syria/MBROS all want Sharia Law under the guise of democracy. This would exist even of we did not.
Anywho the significance of Egypt going more hardliner Muslim is it will likely kick off another Arab Israeli war. A moderate Egypt has kept shit cool for 30+ years.
Read up on the multiple Arab Israeli wars and how it changes the shape and structure of the middle east. Whether you agree with the result, that is likely the future if Egypt becomes more hardline.
Regardless what flag you waive and who you support if you're a peace loving person the Muslim brotherhood leading Egypt does not positively aid peace in any shape form or fashion

Arab spring has done no good for us and no good for Arab countries.. I do not support these revolutions at all.

yes, this all goes well back ... britain & france were meddling/colonizing in the middle east before the USA took over that role.pkay wrote:The Muslim brotherhood in it's current form was developed because of british rule in egypt in the 30's.
tourism is trivial to USG.The US's main interest in Egypt has namely been safe tourism and keeping shit peaceful with Egypt and Israel
it's about control - yes, specifically in relation to israel. but then, a major reason for backing israel is that it's part of a strategy to control the region.
of course sharia law isn't new. (and includes various ideas, not all of which are the unpleasant reactionary bits that ppl in the west usually think of.)Iran/Syria/MBROS all want Sharia Law under the guise of democracy. This would exist even of we did not.
but the effect of continual western interference has been to taint most leaders in arab countries as collaborators. if ppl want leaders who don't do whatever the west tells them, they've had very few leaders to choose from. if they also want uncorrupt leaders, what does that leave? religious fundamentalists. that's why they're popular.
given the current state of public opinion in arab countries, if the west tries to prevent all kinds of islamists (a broad term - not all of them are equally unreasonable) from coming ot power, then it will have to subvert democratic elections in arab countries.
if it''s not being too subtle (and irrelevent, since it's not up to me), i'd prefer an egypt that neither starts wars with israel nor is a US client state like egypt became under sadat and remained under mubarak. egypt has been keeping it "cool" by caving in.IAnywho the significance of Egypt going more hardliner Muslim is it will likely kick off another Arab Israeli war. A moderate Egypt has kept shit cool for 30+ years.

but whatever egypt does, the west should be forcing israel to inplement the 2-state solution. the USG funds and arms israel, and can insist on that if it wants to. (it doesn' want to.) if the west did that, no egyptian government could sell an attack on egypt to the egyptian ppl.

Same will happen when Assad will be removed.

I honestly don't think democracy is the answer to their problems. Democracy is 'great' and all but I just don't think democracy is what they need right now.Rönin wrote:Lol yeah fuck democracy and all thatespire wrote:Arab spring has done no good for us and no good for Arab countries..
