Skrillex Saws? - (NOT BASS, and not what you think either)

Post by Deathadder99 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:06 am

Okay, I'm not a massive fan of skrillex, and all his crazy monster bass sounds, but I love his kind of saw/chordal hit type synths, and I'm really not sure how to make something like it. All my attempts have been supersaw type things, but they don't have anywhere near the punch of what this has. Google turns up absolutely nothing, apart from the hundreds of "OMG HOW DO I MAKE BASS LIKE SKRILLEX" posts. Any ideas? I've tried heavily compressed distorted supersaws, and I suspect those are along the right lines, but It's not anywhere near as close as I'd like. I use NI Massive pretty much exclusively (REDIZER too sometimes) as well, just so you are aware. Thanks :)

Examples:

1:05-1:08

1:37-1:40

Try a saw wave and a square wave. Detune the square wave by like 20 cent. Then add a lfo to both OSC pitch and set that to about 70 cent. Then keep the LFO un synced and turn the rate all the way up.

Its not exactly it but its close. SHould get you going in the right direction.

Your perception of the way those saws sound is altered because of where they are in the mix and the Lead on top of them and Bass underneath them.

All you need is some Saws detuned supersaw style, unison upped according to your taste or whatever method you want to get more detunage/oscillators, and a little bit of White Noise oscillator on top of them. Then you can throw on some tape saturation to bring out a little crunch and you should be on the right track.

Also, once you've got your chords laid out and your sound done, if you want you're chord hits to all sound uniform and the same, just record them to audio, choose one you like, and use the audio clip of that chord hit whenever you need it.

Thanks. The bouncing to audio tip I hadn't really thought of, and yeah I know layering is key, but my supersaws are never really punchy enough and sound more like pads, and I suppose I'm just looking for tips to give them the power and punch I need.:)

Well like I said, a lot of the "punch" you hear in those skrillex saws comes from the other parts of the composition.

There's a kick underneath it (punchy), then there's a bass note underneath them (body), and then there's that lead on top of them.

I guarantee if you trigger a kick drum every time you hit your supersaw (with short attack and decay/no release i hope) it'll sound punchier. You can also gently compress your supersaw to add some snap.

just like to add, you should mess with your ADSR envelop (lower decay / adjust sustain) if you want more "plucky" and less "pad" sounding chords

What does being a fan of skrillex have to do with being a noob? This was a good question, as I was also curious about such saw sounds. Honestly stfu. We wan't to learn the basis of a new sound, that's only going to help us with sound design, the more you know the better. So I don't see the damn problem.

+1

I can't even enjoy listening to skrillex more than one song every now and then. But honestly I would be soooooo fuckin proud if I had as much skill at producing as he does :o

As a drummer and having periodically learnt 2 other instruments, I can appreciate pretty much any music that takes talent, and even music that takes no talent if I like the souund of it.

But unfortunately Haters gonna hate

Woahhh... First person I've blocked.

Right - I can't listen the example but I think I know the part you mean and it'll almost certainly be layered.

Try some sort of bass sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soaliOjSJVE then some kind of super saw chord sequence above that. Add a sub and some punchy drums and you'll be filling out the freq spectrum nicely.
