the opera concerns a kid who created multiple online identities, and through the web of lies he created, managed to orchestrate his own stabbing in a dramatic back alley encounter with a mentally retarded boy whom he claimed to be in love with

its TRUE operatic fair, i mean its darkly comic, tragic, depraved, pretty gay too... everything Opera loves to be!

there has been a documentary on this on Channel 4, i think it was a Dispatches

this kid was like, 2 years below me, he came back to school after most of the fuss had died down, but obviously via a bit of detective work we clocked on to who he was the day after he had himself stabbed so obviously when he came back to school, we knew it was him, despite the name change.

Okay, you asked for it:

I went to school with this kid named named Steven and he was definitely disturbed. I think a lot his issues stemmed from the fact that he basically lived in the shadow of his more popular, handsome, athletic, achieving brother. Basically, kid had low self-esteem. Well, that, and a chemical imbalance.

Anyway, the bizarre behavior could be first noticed when he'd bee seen trying to flirt with the prettiest girls of the class before the teacher arrived. He'd do this by chatting anime and relaying dead-end stories about something a teacher said in a gurgling, serial-rapist voice that could make John Wayne Gacy squirm. It was like he was devout disciple of a maniac self-help guru that fucked people over by giving them the worst advice possible. The guru did manage to get him a disturbingly vein-covered body though. The girls squirmed and shifted coldly in their seats while shifted their gaze in an attempt to seek out anything distant to pull themselves away from his ominous presence. Any normal human being would walk away given the reception, but not Steven. Steven was the definition of a creep, and he had no problem gripping their legs or arms and demanding attention. After the predictable reaction by the girl, Steven kept it classy by calling them whores, threatening physical harm to them, and, on a few special occasions, stalking them.

I know he got a few restraining orders, but I also heard rumors of sending them anime porn in the mail, and even rape.
I don't know how it perpetuated. He was sent to therapy and all sorts of other shit, but because his mom was a teacher and his brother was so well liked, I think he got A LOT more leeway than any "average" student would have.
