-- About the Artists --

* GRIZ *

Griz is a young producer from Detroit. In his own words he is a "vinyl lover, people hugger."

* PAUL BASIC *

Over the last several years, Colorado producer Paul Basic (Paul Brandt) has developed his own brand of beats fusing dusty samples with hard hitting drums and razor-sharp bass lines. His roots are in drumming, having played in a band with label-mates Michal Menert and Derek Vincent Smith through high school before moving on to produce his own tracks. He draws from a slew of inspirations in order to create his own style within the PLM electro hip-hop movement. A Colorado native, Paul lived on both coasts while pursuing a degree in audio production, before he came back to Colorado to team up with his crew and begin his quest for domination of the global dance floor.

* GROUNDISLAVA *

For Jasper Patterson AKA Groundislava, creativity combined with the video game, sci-fi sounds and general aesthetics of the 1980’s have been instilled since day one. A young 20 year-old hailing from Venice, California, Jasper takes creative freedom and emotion and injects it into a sound grounded in beats, video games, technology and self-proclaimed “nerdy shit.” As part of the Wedidit Collective (helmed by his old schoolmate Henry Laufer, better known as Shlohmo), Groundislava is the next representative stepping into the light and exposing a group of youngsters each with their own nonchalantly expert takes on forms of beat and electronic music.

* Living painting by Alexander D.C.D. Smith *

There is a constant struggle for balance inside me that energizes my art. This struggle stems, in part, from who I am a biracial artist who has had to contend with issues of identity and who constantly examines who he is. In my art, as in my life, I examine these issues of duality. To me, everything has an opposite: good and bad, positive and negative, flat paint and gloss paint, control and its loss. My work explores these dualities and challenges the viewer to do so as well. As ideas emerge for new pieces, so too do color schemes. I see the work in my head before a single drop of paint hits the canvas. The textures, however, evolve organically with each subsequent layer of paint, as my conscious mind and subconscious mind strive to create balance in the piece.
