How did dub and edm influence your life?

Post by Jux » Sat Jul 21, 2012 5:31 am

When I got involved in my local underground scene I was a young kid still bangin' and living that lifestyle, but the more I got involved in music the less I wanted to stay with the movement. My perception is any of us who've ever banged started because we didn't care about ourselves enough to care about the consequences (violence, death, prison, etc). I was born into a fucked up, pardon my language, environment, and poverty and abandonement breeds capitalistic mentality and a savage nature. But back to the point... when I was at this house party the kid spinning tunes was playing mostly reggae and some hip hop and grime, but snuck in hungry dub by kromestar and I gotta say, I hadn't heard anything like that before. So I asked the kid what that tune was, and he told me dubstep. Now, my initial reaction was "wait, what?!?!" I went back to my crib and started listenin to as much dubstep as I could get my hands on.

I had produced hip hop and r&b for several years, but it was getting kinda stagnant, so I started trying my hand at producing dubstep. Was a lot more technical than the aforementioned genres, but that kept me engaged. It was, and still is, an adventure. Sometimes I spend a few hours just on sound design. I don't know how to put it, I think EDM as a whole is such a rewarding form of music to make, there aren't really a whole lot of limitations and its a much more involved process.

Then I caught a bid. Did three on a max out, and since I've been back out I've just stayed a part of the scene and doing positive, constructive things, producing, learning, growing as an artist and a person. Anyways I just wanted to know if anyone else had dub, or music in general, affect their life in this manner.

Huh.. I wasn't aware the underground scene was characterized by "violence, death, prison".

Personally getting into edm has allowed me to listen to music I like and not just stuff that gets shoved down my throat by the media. That and it allowed me to appreciate the quality of sound.

I like music amongst other things, such as movies, books and sports.

I grew up with it and always preferred it to real music with real instruments. This also influenced me into producing myself when I was young.

Rule of thumb: If it sounds good it is good.

This thread is a bit strange.

I suppose everything in life influences you. I haven't really been deep into the Dub scene (too many hippies at the nights) I guess some of the greats (Pablo, Tubby, Scientist) influenced me in buying a mixing desk so I could do my own Dub edits. Thats about it, I am not invested into it enough for it to make major impacts on my life.

I hope you didn't mean Dubstep by the way, its easy to get the two confused.
