Its a Trap!...What is all this 'Trapstep' Hype?

Post by Skitso » Sat Jul 21, 2012 10:22 am

Everywhere for the last week or so i keep seeing people talking about 'Trap' and new tunes under the genre 'Trapstep'.

From what I gathered it originated from the states and it's music you sell drugs to? To me, it just sounds like hip-hop/rap? What is this obsession to categorise every tune into a certain genre?

I think it seemed to establish its self over here when Flosstradamus 'Total Recall' was getting shit loads of airplay.

There's my rant over for this issue anyway :6:

well from my very limited knowledge (i.e. reading about it randomly somewhere else) it takes the shit parts of dubstep and the even shitter parts of hip hop/rap to form the ultimate in shittnes known as trap or to you and me, crap.

i really am getting too old for this kinda bullshit now, so if someone wants to prove me wrong then fine go ahead, but its just another pathetic electronic music fad, we ve had a whole host of them many can be found here...

Well said :z: . I totally agree, this hipster fascination on sticking a label on everything that is new or different (or shit) just seems crazy.

Just looking at that link you posted, didn't even realise there was so many, I knew there was a lot but...fuck.

So what am I to call Juke, very fast repetitive beats? So someone will understand what it is that I like, or should I just call it all dubstep? Happy? Im no big fan of genres and categories but it's fucking easy to explain which type of music it is. You just don't have to be small minded and box everything or argue about it (which is petathic) but pls dont say that DJ Elmoe etc is the same as Roska etc

btw labeling things is now also seen as hipster fascination? :D lol

Trap is just a lot like southern rap and crunk in it's true form.

Now it's one of the many kinds of music being misunderstood and often made bland by hipsters on the Internet.

1)the name trap wasn't invented by 'hipsters'.

2) I agree that it is a useless name, for 'trap' tunes have existed for years, before 'trap' they were just known as 'below average hip-hop influenced dubstep'

3) I'd rather use hip-hop influenced dubstep, lengthy I know, than trap

4) trap is a term that existed long before and is related to drugs (check urban dictionary or something), which I believe is still its most common usage

5) I agree, this will blow over soon.

there's a thread about it in SNH.

OP makes a weird opening statement there, involving Clams Casino and others (which is in no way trap...)

It all sounds like hip hop beats to me. I enjoy it. I don't see how this is a trend either since hip hop has been around for a long time and has had a strong following. Does that make me a hipster?

That was made back in april. Ive not bothered to update it but for the first 8 or so pages it retards arguing about what is or isnt counted as trap or whatever when that wasnt my intention to be strictly that type of music.
See how it does not say "YO THIS IS A TRAP THREAD ONLY!" but "Future Bass Mega-thread (Trap/Bass/Rap/???)" as its all encompassing and frankly didn't know what else to call it.
I made the thread as a catch all for stuff like it and similar to it and Ive heard clams stuff in maybe 30 mixes with all the other artists mentioned in the OP and that have sprung up further along such as R.L grimes, Ryan Hemsworth and so on so its just seemed appropriate to put it all in one place.

Fuck knows where trap-step came from though that is a new one :cornlol: but the internet sure loves a wonky name.

I will say because of that style I actually ended up listening to loads of rap and hihop as there is a massive amount of cross over and instrumentals from one another being reused and remixed.
