Delete your samples

Why are you just saying to delete samples? The thread had lots of varying opinions, and Ibunshi was actually in favour of keeping a lot of samples.

Personally i'm trying to organise my samples library, so i have a better idea of what i've got in there. That way if i want a certain type of sample when writing, i'll know where to go. At the moment it can be a bit of a lucky dip.

Because this is a different thread in which I put across my opinion, not a like for like copy. I was using the quotes above to illustrate a point I was making.

Lol fair enough. Yeah, i agree to a point - if your library is so large that you can't find anything then it can slow you down. But the flipside is that you might find an inspiring sample that you didn't know you had.

I'm trying to organise everything at the moment - synth patches, effects presets, samples, key commands etc. I want to be able to just think of a sound and be able to make it in seconds, rather than devoting the afternoon to finding a good kick.

Which is why at the start I advocated listening through things first before considering deletion.

There's alot of good material, and some crap. Like said, I guess it's a matter of spending a long time going through and deleting the crap.

It reminds me that I have to actually do this, and also organise my sample library and choose one (or two) plugins for each purpose.

In the past year I have tried to reduce my sample library, pretty much just working out of a favorites folder for material. Just yesterday I was thinking of taking the back-ups (the original downloads pretty much), zipping them up and storing them, so they are out of sight, but if for some reason I decide I need to go through them and pick out more, I can.

anyway regarding your post wub, i have to agree with ibunshi. i have tons of samples found on forums and i know how to navigate them. i find stuff quickly if i have to, but have a lot of stuff to experiment with.
you are right, its more difficult to develop a signature sound that way, but i'd rather have people recognize my tunes in the way they're built or how i approach melody or whatever it is that stands out than a couple of samples i always use. cause if the latter is the case, all one has to do is find those samples and voila they can rip me off.

Agreed, but this works on the proviso that the samples are GOOD and you have listened to them, analysed them and marked them as GOOD...not the millions strewn across countless hard drives approach.

This is something I've been doing for a while now. My sample library is pretty bare bones already but I still delete stuff regularly.

Have this same problem when I go into a shop to buy alcohol. Always way too many options and it takes ages to pick a drink. Gonna go have a gander at my samples now though see if I can't get some structure goin cheers for the motivation man!

I'm currently going through my samples folder, trying to sort out the complete mess that it is, Im about halfway through 50000 samples and Ive already lost about 12Gb of stuff. its good practice to do it every so often I believe. Although I can be a bit temperamental when deleting samples, Its always in the back of my mind that Ill delete something and then Ill find a use for it
On a side note, what do you guys think is the optimum sample library size , for ewse of use yet still having a good number of quality samples
EDIT: Ive just been going through my samples now, Ive just found a folder (amazingly named "Chicken and Waffles" )hidden deep within about 5 sub folders filled with some awesome dubby style guitar riffs. I need to sort out my files more often

Ibunshi has long been perfecting that sound. Good stuff.

But maybe instead of deleting them all, you can start by
-CTRL+F/Cmd+F
-enter '*VEC*;*VEH*.wav'
-delete

My problem is that i have a really good system and my sample library is really well organized (bit OCD with it), but I only use maybe 30% of what i have on offer. But i cant bare to part with any of it,

I actually just started organizing my sample library on my external drive and when I'm done I'll move it back to my laptop... The way I'm doing it is taking a while so I just tend to do it at night or when I don't have enough time to work on anything really. Deleting some stuff is probably a good idea because over the last couple years it's become quite a mess ><

There is a progrma called BARD that is really useful for doing that kind of stuff, maybe check out the lite version. Dunno why the full version is so expensive tho? I helped with the beta and find its pretty quick for sorting stuff.
