I'm in the market for a new laptop, too. Budget around the same.

Needs to run Ableton Suite and Windows Office. And that's it. I don't even want it to hear about the internet...

I use Reason, but only for fun, would play a few games if I could but not after a massive dedicated gaming laptop, fairly mobile as well for uni, basically just a nice fast really sound all rounder

How much storage space do you need?

I wouldn't bother spending upwards of £500 on a laptop unless you're doing some video editing, gaming, working with lots of audio or something similarly resource-intensive.
System specs have increased consistently year on year but actual user requirements haven't. If you can get by with Photoshop 7 instead of CS5, do so. If you're not a torrent fiend or film maker, you will not need a 1TB hard drive. If your primary use for a computer is Facebook or Office, you do not need an i7 CPU. Don't bother with Windows 7 if you only need XP. Using 8GB of RAM is not a certainty - it is a big challenge. Don't waste your money on overkill specs, that's my advice for anyone buying a laptop.

Thanks, yeah I suppose I do not need anything super powerful, was just thinking that in the long run the best I can get now will last longer?

Nah not really man. If durability is your main aim, go for a second hand IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad or something. Those things are rock solid.
I've got a 7+ year old Dell laptop which has survived daily usage, a whole cup of tea spilt over it, multiple drops, condensation, etc. It's still working fine to this day. I know people who've gone through 3 Macbook Pros in the same amount of time who take better care of their shit than I do. "Best" is subjective and is rarely linked to the price tag.

Thread hijack time. I also am in the market for a PC laptop for gaming purposes (I may end up buying a desktop). Money isn't an issue though I'm mostly clueless when it comes to quality PC laptop manufacturers.

though i have a (more expensive) thinkpad, ideapads look pretty good.

depending on how high spec you go, an SSD for the hard drive is more noticeable (for performance - specifically, responsiveness) than i7 or 8G - though an SSD won't be as big.
