Building my set for LIVE performance- advice/tips!?

This is something I always think about and I'd love to buy loads of gear to do a proper live show. A possible idea is to have Ableton running on the laptop for the backing track, and then just selectively mute whatever you'll be performing live. I'm not too clued up on Ableton, so I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I'm sure my suggestion is possible.

You could alternatively have the backing track on an MP3 player (if you don't want to use your laptop) with the parts you'll be playing live already muted on the MP3. Would be a good idea to have little interludes in there while you switch gear. If you have a long enough interlude you should have enough time to sit at the drum kit. This would work quite well providing you can hear the backing track well to stay in time (maybe have a separate pair of headphone for this, and if you have a multi-output soundcard you could have a click track coming out of an auxiliary channel that only you hear - this would probably require some crazy mixer setup though - I guess the click idea is only suitable for the lap top, however you can do it with an MP3 player. The backing track would have to only be in mono as you'd just use the 2 stereo channels, one with the backing and one with the click. Obviously they both get separated with a mixer so the click doesn't go to the main mix )

On a side note, what this guy does is really cool - I'd love to be able to afford to buy all the gear to be able to do this sort of thing live (well, I've already got the Evolver ):

Have a drummer! Makes the whole sound a lot more 'real' in my opinion

Having a real drummer is the ultimate win IMO, however it does also add a lot more complications (I believe the OP mentioned some of those). I always like the idea of having a fully live Drum & Bass/Dubstep BAND, where there are no backing tracks at all and everything is played by people. Hopefully I can work on organising that in a few years time If I had a drumkit I wouldn't mind learning to play repetitive dance beats, I'd find it fun (I was also thinking of how to get the drums to sound really big by using triggers on the kick and snare, along with the mic'd sound, to give it that big layered sound - obviously lots of processing on the triggered sounds as well).

The annoying thing is that I have the know-how of how to do all this stuff, but I'm lacking in funds and people with the same ideas and ambitions. I'll make it happen one day though
