Best/Cheapest way to soundproof the tits out of a room?

Post by sam_vogel » Tue Aug 07, 2012 6:01 am

Hello all,

I am very shortly moving into an apartment in LA when I go back for school. Luckily I have my own room, which will become much more of a studio than anything else. This being said, I've come to realize that maybe not all my neighbors will love me slapping dubstep as loud as I can at 3 in the morning... However nothing will stop me producing at all hours. I'm sure this is going to get a bunch of flame as I could have easily googled methods, however I decided the best place to learn some not so typical solutions would be from you guys. Any Ideas?

hmm... i definitely have means to obtain free mattress, and I definitely wouldn't want to use them for sleeping if you know what I mean. haha thanks for the suggestion. What about egg cartons? or that shit you can buy at guitar center (or similar store)? is it worth the money?

You asked for cheapest, I gave you cheapest. No idea how much guitar centre would charge.

egg cartons are for treatment, not proofing. Thickness matters when soundproofing. Try to cover all the windows and doors, anywhere sound would be able to direct pass through. A thick carpet on the ground can prevent rumbling in the lower floor too.

I should have clarified... while being a broke ass college student does lean me towards a cheaper solution, producing is something that I really do take seriously and if I need to spend some money to be able to do what I love to do than so be it.

Rockwool panels covering the wall in question.

Buy some rockwool cheap from a wholesaler, cover it in material.

That is the answer.

you basically cannot soundproof on a budget doing anything that would make a substantial difference would take alot of time effort and money. your much better off treating your room for accoustics and being loud when you can and buying good headphones for at night.

you don't want to produce at levels that you dj at anyways

if you're using a level that you're comfortable with for 3-4 hours of constant listening, it will likely not be a level that will bother your neighbors much. but if it does they'll let you know.

maybe ask your neighbors to listen while you play music and find the level just below of that they can hear easily.
