From Brostep to Real Dubstep.

Post by upanddown » Wed Aug 15, 2012 10:18 am

Hello guys ,

I learned to produce some years ago , and I naturally turned myself into the dubtep vibes when I started making music...

First I produced a lot of noisy Brostep with my band , here is on off our track like that you can see the style :

Colonel Up and Mister Down - High treason

Soundcloud

We now decided to turn our mind to the real roots of dubstep , something more deep ,sub basses, with more works on the beats and the breaks, I mean no need to explain you all here now what real dustep is :)

here is the result of our work :

Colonel Up and Mister Down - 6 tracks minimix preview

I would like to have your opinion about the style, and I would really love to get some advices to make the track better !

what did we miss in the production ??

have you any tutorial about how to get the "rides" sounding nice and clear , some good tutorials about the reverbs and the echoes ? the mastering of the beat and the Hihats?

I think it would be great to make a nice topic with you people sharing your little tips how you do the make your dubstep tracks sounding the more deep and the more clear as possible !

I will start with this serie of tutorials from DJ DISTANCE. They really helped me to make my sub basses sounding nice and clear, and I learned a lot by listening to this guy !

Distance - Sub Bass tutorial

Distance tutorial - Mid range bass

Distance - Reese Twisted Dubstep Bassline Tutorial

Enjoy !

It's my life long question. What is 'real dubstep'? I mean I've searched around the internet and back but I haven't found any real dubstep.

On a more serious note:
You can get your cymbals nice and crisp by cutting out all of the low end. I usually really push this far to about 3kHz.
You could also add some slight distortion to brighten them up a bit.

Haven't really found any tutorial about reverbs and delay's but I think these 2 are just trial and error. Just fiddle around with them and if it sounds good, well than it probably is good.

Getting into mastering takes a lot of practice and a lot of ear-training. You can find a LOT of information on this subject on the internet. But don't you mean the mixdown of the 'beat and the hihats' ?

cheers for the advice i'll try it out ;)

yeah I'd like to know more about the mixdown of the beat and the hihats!

and or the reverb and the delay , I'd like to fing really good bst's ...

For the delay I'm using OHMBOYZ ( who's quite amazing but not so easy to use ) and for the reverb I'm still blocked with my ableton reverb ( I've got good results with it ut not as good as I wish )
