Decent article on history of Dubstep

Post by pete_bubonic » Wed Aug 29, 2012 8:06 am

So rare that American mainstream magazines do the actual homework, but with words from Blackdown, Boomnoise, Joe Nice and Dave Q, I thought this was pretty on the money. It's not exhaustive and completely misses what the actual current evolution of Dubstep is ( the heavy dub techno and house influences that have pervaded the scene from Peverelist, Hessle Audio camp and alike), has no mention of Rinse or the Bristol effect, but a decent read nonetheless. I think the points about Skrillex are good, his history, his divisive nature especially against what the actual foundation of what Dubstep was (space, rhythm, weight). Although I see little if an relevance Deiselboy has to anything...

Worth a read, certainly one of the most informed and researched American pieces in a while.

Do/did uninformed Americans call all dance music 'techno' until relatively recently? I have heard and seen the name misused so many times in the American mainstream I wonder if they actually know its a genre of dance music rather than an all inclusive alias for electronics dance music. Also why do american press keep referring to edm as something new, the term has existed for ages, people were calling the prodigy edm when I was 14!

I've always seen Americans call it 'Electronica'. Over here people said 'Techno', now the say 'Dubstep' -.-

Decent article, got some holes, but good read nonetheless, thanks for sharing.

Nah, plenty of people use(d) "techno" or "electro" for pretty much any type of electronic music, not just americans.

But when it works best, the producer makes a connection that few have dared before, the unholy union of doom-laden, downtempo heavy metal and roots reggae.

because they used to call it techno, and only nerds listened to techno. But then when deadmau5 came around everyone under the age 30 called it house/edm and everyone over 30 still called it techno...

there is a difference between house and techno....

"Music journalists and fans of techno are generally selective in their use of the term; so a clear distinction can be made between sometimes related but often qualitatively different styles, such as tech house and trance. "Techno" is also commonly confused with generalized descriptors, such as electronic music and electronic dance music."
