Meeting other artists & musicians
Meeting other artists & musicians
I'm so immersed in music now that hanging out with my old friends became boring (mostly cause they sit around playing video games and smoking pot)
I've met a few people who were into making music and we hit it off right away talking about plugins, sound design, technical music stuff. became really good friends, hanging out, messing around on beats, or just going out and partying.
people move away though and it's hard to find people who are into music as much as I am. I find myself bored hanging out with normal people.
where's a good place to meet other local musicians? I'm trying to find a job in a studio, seems like a sure fire way. I am enrolling in studio & production classes at a local CC so I'm sure I'll meet some people (probably mostly hiphop tho)..
Doesnt seem like there are many electronic musicians in socal, well I'm sure there are but I can't find them haha. I have the most in common with musicians, not so much the classical accoustic guitar type, its hard to find like-minded people.

I used to hang out in studios when I was younger but everyone was older than me (30 yo +, I was 15 when I started). Met a lot of people through bands and going to shows. Recently got together with some other heads through a blog. You never know man.

^ Both excellent suggestions.
You've heard the expression "be the change you want to see?" While you're waiting to meet like-minded people, make music as much as you can, and in the downtime go to shows/parties - or even better yet put on your own shows/parties - start a label, a blog, or a zine, take classes (and not just music production: art, literature, science, philosophy, logic, business are all relevant to making this a full time occupation... education is never a bad thing in any form) and the rest will fall into line eventually. I.e., don't talk about it, just do it... and the others who are doing it too will find you.
IME there is the same ratio of 'cool people' anywhere you go (somewhere around 3-5% by my reckoning.) The only thing that affects it then is the population density: more people around means more likelihood of bumping into one of the other 3-5% folks. This is why shows & parties are a good bet - many more like-minded people in attendance.

We all gotta start somewhere man. Even as an average Joe' I've been at this for about only 4 months. Just started making tunes directly from my heart Today and got a full good understanding of what I want.
I got to meet tons of great people in SF so far. Pretty happy about it
I really love music so much I don't care about success or any of that at the moment with music, just learning and making tunes..and one of these days I'll make something really beautiful or amazing. And that's all I really want.
School is also a great place, and talk to your friends for encouragement.

Don't be afraid to link up with people you've reached out to (or have reached out to you) via the internet.
I live in a pretty isolated area of the UK and I'd say that most of the people I now have good musical or business relationships with, I met via the internet.
An email/IM is essentially the same as a postal letter and behind every screen name or Facebook profile there's a real person (maybe not Wanka).
Although don't get your hopes up too much. Music people are still people. Most of them

I've lived in San Francisco for almost 20 years. It's... well, it's better than many places, granted. But the problem is that while there's plenty of heads for the music, the thing about it being simple to pick up a music career is totally, 100% not true. There's very little studio work, a bit of DJ work (but mostly weddings/bar mitzvahs/corporate shit) - as for people making a living making original music though, no - this is not the town. You'd make more money with a much lower cost of living some place like Denver than here, trust me.MrMush wrote:I heard sf is the best to meet people for music.

And the "scene" that does exist here is impacted by the same market dynamics as pretty much anything else in San Francisco: most shit's expensive. Clubs don't exist that can't stay busy all the time and they'll book accordingly, so we get a lot of really bad music in abundance around here too (one of the world capitals of cheezhouse) - this is also true for record stores, radio stations (god, especially radio stations! We seriously have one of the worst radio selections of any major metro US area... fucking barf-tastic) ... you get the point.
Thankfully the larger San Francisco Bay Area has other cities & suburbs that encourage music folks to create and play out, but they lack some of the manic vital energy that big cities attract & produce; you can go to shows in Oakland, San Jose, etc., but won't usually want to hang out around town so much afterwards (sorry, my opinion) so much as hang out at someone's house in a lot of those places; while San Francisco all you wanna do it trip around town all day because it's so beautiful and there's so much to do otherwise.
And as for the Cali life in general:
I won't lie. It's fucking awesome IMO.

Re: Meeting other artists & musicians
This is great advice. You would be surprised how something as simple as sending a message to a producer can eventually turn into a fairly strong friendship or relationship. Obviously this isn't true for all producers, but it's worth a shot. Some obviously don't have the time, patience, or care to have in depth conversations or give you in depth tips, and you really can't blame them at all for that.£10 Bag wrote:Don't be afraid to link up with people you've reached out to (or have reached out to you) via the internet.

Believe it or not I have actually become what I would like to consider fairly good acquaintances with my favorite producer and it all just stemmed from a simple message. Originally I had no intent to produce music seriously at all, and now it's something I've become quite passionate about and have learned a hell of a lot about. All this, has stemmed from one message, the fact that it's my favorite producer is just icing on the cake.
Re: Meeting other artists & musicians
Yea thats dope bro!!
Ive tryed some producers who have names for themselves
i got one reply and that was it...
At the same time you wanna be persistant but not a bug.
Ive been tryin to make edm since 05 and i still cant get a grasp on the top dollar sound.
I try to stay passionite but its tough cause im never happy with the outcome.
So i feel like i have nothin to offer when in the process of reachin out
so i get stuck
