how you feel about your music
how you feel about your music
So I'm pretty much still on the amatuer dude of things although i am getting better, from time to time I'll post one of my taboos on face book to see what friends and family think about it, and the responses are usually positive, but for some reason i always think they ate just telling me that to be nice. Half of the Tracks i do i don't really like and the other half are ok, i think this helps me to improve, but is this normal? Or am i supposed to love the tracks i do? How do you guys feel about the tracks you make? people say I'm not bad but i think they are just bull shittin me.
Re: how you feel about your music
As cliche as it sounds, it shouldn't matter what other people think of your music. Make the music that you enjoy making, and that you want to listen to, and if people like it, great, if not, that's fine, at least you like it and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you just made an awesome track that you love with all of your heart.
Re: how you feel about your music
Shooting completely from the hip here ... it sounds to me like you're probably making tunes that are alright (or in any case not bad) in terms of production value, but which aren't really capturing the essence that you might have been going for when you sat down and started working on the song. It's a huge difference between making a song that's good, and making the song you wanted to make.
If that sounds vaguely right ... well, I'm sorry, because I don't have a good solution to it. Maybe there's a lack of inspiration, maybe you're having trouble translating your vision into sound. This latter is usually what catches me up (though I don't produce in any but the most amateur sense) ... but I'll tell you what. I think maybe people get overwhelmed (and don't even realize it?) by just how limitless their options are. If you've ever played in a band ... rock band, jazz band, etc.,... you remember that you were kind of limited by your options, so you had a framework in which to build and you knew that the second you sat down to translate a thought into song. Well, now you've got a plethora of soft synths which seem to be so options-rich that you could theoretically whip off just about any sound you can imagine. Maybe it would be better to have a few creative people in a room with a steel guitar, a stand-up bass, a few drums, and a microphone.
Okay so if that's even plausible, the closest approximation would be to isolate some sound, some preset, some samples, whatever... and do what you can to forget that all the other options exist. If you can conjure up a vision using only those few things, then when you make it happen, I bet you'll like it and your comrades will too.

the mentality i have, and i think a lot of others here have as well, is that my music isn't terrible but always room for improvement

Re: how you feel about your music
I wonder about this myself sometimes. Having the ability to share our music with so many people at a moment's notice via the internet can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, without this ability we wouldn't be able to get feedback from people who actually know what they're talking about and promote our shit as easily.
For example, I've had requests to use a couple of my tracks in podcasts and mixes, something I would've had a lot more trouble achieving without Soundcloud and this forum. On the other hand, even though I try not to I find myself measuring my success on any given track based on the amount of positive feedback, downloads and favourites it gets. There's people who I consistently get honest feedback and encouragement from (my man Reverb
), but I find that when I upload a track and it gets little or no response I feel like I've failed, cos I compare it to earlier works that got more comments from people who didn't just seem to be spamming for self-promo.
The track in my sig for example, I posted it in the private Facebook group I'm in with my mates as well as in the DSF hip hop dubs thread and got no responses. That leaves me wondering whether people liked it but didn't say anything, didn't like it or just didn't listen in the first place. I don't promote my stuff for monetary gain or anything, I just want to know whether my tunes are actually good or I'm just seeing them through rose-tinted glasses.
So I guess the internet makes me a little insecure, but for all it's given me I wouldn't go without it.

I think that as the creator of my music, I am witness to all it's faults and weakness right from the very moment of it's conception. I never make anything I dislike, I love it probably in a similar way to how a parent loves it's child. But I don't love it in the same way I love other people's music, where there's that element of mystery in appreciating someone else's thought processes.
Melodic deepness from my mind.

Re: how you feel about your music
Where would i find these people who know what they are talking about? I have been posting on sound cloud, you tube, and Facebook i dont have comments for shit, and if do its hey this cool I really like that pad or nice melody or somethin. I dont care about that shit i wanna know what sucked about it, and what can i do to make Better. I think like people are afraid to give me some sort if negative feed back, but I'm here to learn. i post my music because i want to improve it not let it sit and gather dust on YouTube getting 1 like a and a comment a month.

You should start by putting a link to your Soundcloud in your signature on here. That's what leads most people to my tracks, I assume.grimsin wrote:Where would i find these people who know what they are talking about? Re: how you feel about your music
vulnerable..
I don't like showing people my tunes..
Most things I do are kept secret!
Since usually most of what I make has a connection with how I feel.

Re: how you feel about your music
i honestly do have a hard time showing people my tunes because i do feel vulnerable, but i push past it because i feel its the only way ill get better at what i do. I hate googling shit to learn about anything including music because Google sucks when it comes to pretty much anything. You cant believe half the shit on the internet. I love how people on the forum get pissed or say something negative when someone asks a question "google it" people say well, if i googled it i wouldnt get on the forum as much and half of the knowledge i would have from google would probably be wrong. So if i post a question that has already been asked 100000 times who cares. if people have a problem with it then ignore the topic. I want to expand my knowledge of every aspect of dubstep, brostep, or whatever kind of step actually just edm in general. Im getting off topic sorry other posts i have got me all frustrated because people are rude.... cant we all just get along and share the common interest we ALL have? The love of music and being a musician?
Re: how you feel about your music
Nah man, what they mean is do a google search of this forum. It's better than using the actual DSF search bar. If its been asked before, why not just look for the answer previously given rather than troubling the same people with it again?
Re: how you feel about your music
I did not know that i have been using the forum search like wtf. You saying just go to google type in something with dubstep forum at the end and blam there it is? I had the wrong.idea the whole time

i actually despise most of my old productions, they were really primitive in technique and immature in content.
it takes ages to master all the skills required to become a decent producer but when you start off u think u can do it all, when in fact u cant.
