I need a compressor.

Post by Hircine » Mon Oct 22, 2012 3:42 pm

I need a compressor for parallel / bus compression. It must be simple and able to deliver some nice saturation / colour when the gain is cranked (analog).

http://www.pspaudioware.com/plugins/dyn ... sspressor/ is this a good option? can I find anything cheaper?

Thanks.

I use Ableton's compressor. It gets the job done but I haven't really explored plug-in compressors.

The Kramer one is sick, but definitely out of my price range. I like how the Glue one is a SSL model, definitely worth a try. About Ableton, I currently own suite 8, waiting for the 9 update to finally move from Studio One.

what's that impetus knob? was watching a video where the A/R was all the way down with a very low impetus value and the high end was pumping, just the kind of sound I was looking for.

Density mkIII by bootsy is free and has it's own colouration, definitely give it a look.

I came to say Stillwell Bombardier and (the free, but still fantastic) Density mkiii.

Seems that I've been beaten to it.

I use Ableton's as well, so I can't say much. But if you're going to consider the Glue, just wait for Live 9 as they teamed up with Cytomic for a default plugin called "Glue Compressor".

Bombardier or Rocket for parallel compressing? It's going to be one of those, now sure which, I'm really bad with compressors.

Camelphat or even the free Camelcrusher should get a mention, it has all those features you want and more. Fxpansion recently released DCAM FreeComp which is a nice bus compressor. Also DFP Blockfish is very nice and simple for parallel.

I use Camelcrusher on a high passedaux to distort and squash the hell out of the highs, get everything sounding crispy :Q:

rocket. bombadier is too subtle (and fiddly) for really anything other than the 2buss or vox buss.

the impetus on the rocket emulates overdriving the input.

I have never really messed around with a compressor on the master channel or on a main bus. Sorry to kind of diverge from the main topic, but should I try it? Can you get noticeably good results?

If you know what you're doing. This is a good article on mixbuss compression:
