What am I doing wrong?

Post by Hashkey » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:54 pm

This is a typical drum loop I can produce, but I hear like there's something missing and is not sounding professional.
What do you say people?
what should I do to get better?

1) It sounds like every other pattern out there.
2) Nicer Reverb.
3) Humanize drum velocities (specifically hats) to give them a live feel.
4) More hats, see 3).

That is fine, the drum sounds are fat. The problem is it is a 1 bar loop. Add some variation.. During the second bar play the kick drums in a triplet pattern, Remove the last hihat, Have a ghost hit in an important spot.. Just try shit.

For me i could use this to build my bass/synth around.. Then i would go back and edit so the beat plays off of the synth/bass melody i just layed out. Its all about getting a flow, try to bob to the beat and it will be easier to see if the beat is flowing or if there is something wrong..

Drums sound fine, its all about the arrangement.

1)That's true I knew that :)
2)what reverb should I use. I heard plate is the best on drums is it right?
3) Any tutorial about that around? looks like I really suck at humanizing hats

Ask not what wrongs you are doing.

it needs bass and melodies..

try writing lyrics and singing over it as well.. and then master it and release it to get fans and shows so you don't have to work at starbucks for the rest of you're life

you got this..

Sounds fine to me. Nothing needs to be perfect. Only as perfect as you personally need it to be.
...in my opinion

Hey, since I'm seeing this much like a collab to grow,What would you do to make the snare not sound fake?

Remember I'm here to learn

@neon & jri I know that it may sound good to me but we are almost never objective with the stuff we make.
So the opinion of other people more experienced than me it's super important to me. :)

its the first drum hit in this

w/ another layered on top with the decay turned way down to like around 400 ms

that was sort of just my opinion, all those "dubstep" snares with the long tails sound bad to me, i usually take all mine from breaks/samples and layer with 808/909/goldbaby claps or snares

snares are tricky. But get like 10 different samples in a drum rack.

3-4 punchy Ludwig snares, a few white noise snares, and a few claps.

then, alternate between which of these you layer (only layers 2-5 samples at any given time). this will give variation and definitely make it sound more human. if when you layer 3-4 samples and it loses punch, just stagger the sample starts a tiny bit.

@bassinine will try that tonite and woah some heavy snares on your sig.
@rayman nice tip I like the way that snare sound and even if it's not the classic heavy dubstep snare I'm accustomed to.

Can you give an example track of what you want your drums to sound like?

This defintely sounds better, try it in a mix and see what it sounds like.

As others have said, try improving the snare - it needs more bite.

that snare needs to be way more punchier, try layering like a sample of you punching yourself in the head, and then for the kick, i think you need to tray and kick yourself in the head, and then layer that behind it too, then it will a completed beat ready for finalization with the wubs and the screeches, and the naughty vocal samples.
