EightySeven - Contact High [Dubstep/Reese]

Post by eightyseven » Wed Nov 28, 2012 4:18 pm

Long time lurker, first time posting, so go easy :6:

I've been putting some finishing touches / trying to finish this track for a while now. Ended up spending way more time on it than I had initially planned, BUT am happy with the way it turned out :)

Besides a few (fairly) minor things here and there, plus the final mixdown, it won't really change too much.

I would LOVE to hear some of your guys' feedback, especially being a bit new around these parts. Even if you don't reply, thanks for taking the time to listen to it and I hope your face was slightly melted!

Hahaha, fair enough! :p Thanks man, glad you dug the intro - I spent a good bit of time working on that. No samples used besides those silly, epic drums.

Not a huge fan of dubstep, or just not this type in general?

Kick/snare are both quite flat sounding and lacking any real power that I'd associate with this type of tune. The midrange sounds themselves don't have a whole lot of variety to their programming and the track feels quite loopy as a result.

hmmm... what are you listening on wub? the kick is not only EQ'd out of the bassline(s), but there is also some sidechaining going on with a ghost kick... the snare's main EQ range is also taken out of it all too. the midrange bit i can understand for sure - i felt like there was enough variation already though >_<

Listening on Sennheiser headphones. I'll have another listen later tonight so so if I've missed something.

It's no so much the pattern/programming, but also the sound itself. Maybe I was expecting more movement from a tune of this style? Anyway, it's a personal point, I'm not the biggest fan of the midrange sound :)

Naysayers will naysay, I fucking dig this tune. Can totally get what you're going for! Only thing I would change is have a much "stompier" kick, the kick you're using doesn't roll with the beat quite as good as it should do for this type of track. But that's only a matter of finding a more optimal sample, rest of the production is fine :D

for sure guys! loving the feedback, especially the honesty. believe me, i take none of it to heart and as long as it's constructive i will always take it into consideration :) i originally had a nice, 3-layer kick that stomped fairly tough but decided to scrap it due to some EQ'ing issues that dealt more-so with gel'ing with other elements. i'm super down to give a new kick a go - none of the drum samples i use aren't processed a decent amount (and / or layered, etc.) so it'll be fun to engineer one that fits the track better.

i feel like because i've heard the track played so many times on my monitors, as well on large club / outdoor PAs, that i've subjectively become totally cool with the way the kick was >_< reasons like this are why i put this track up here. also, that rendered version is missing a (small, but integral) part of the shinier, upper khz region of the snare which i realized after checking the project file, thanks to wub.

anywho, i'm glad you really dug the track TeRRo! it shouldn't be too tough to whip up a "stompier" kick because not too much EQ'ing will need to be done - the bassline(s) are all bussed with a sidechain compressor slightly ducking specific frequencies. i'll see what i can do in the next couple of days and keep you guys posted!

like the intro, pretty creative done! you have this horrrrrible high freq just before the drop.. I'm sure it was meant but.. that actually hurt my ears.. you had it again in a little break at 1:38.. horrid.. the midrange isnt too bad but not really a fan of it myself and your snare sounds a little dry as well but keep it up :)
