Reefer in the studio, the negatives

Post by outdropt » Fri Nov 30, 2012 7:39 pm

I hear a lot of bad things about smoking near speakers and equipment.

Everyone knows that dust and electronics dont mix, when you smoke it leaves residue.

I smoke daily, and i am always on my setup. Gotta couple of questions if anyone is familiar with this. :R:

What is the effect on the speakers if to much dust collects inside of the cabinet, i would assume it would almost dampen the sound.

Do you clean the insides of your monitors? How often?

When dealing with analog hardware do you just clean the outer casing, or do you open it up and swab it down with alcohol. Is there any unexpected effect on the sound quality if your analog hardware is a few years old.

Don't have mic's yet, but any issues with dust collection?

If you have anything else to add on this topic feel free.

i did the same thing for a while...

but then i opened my computer case after only owning if for ~4 months (never smokes cigs in my apt, mind you), and my cpu fan was fucking TERRIBLE. like really, 10x worse than it should have been.

solution, get vent fan blowing away from studio gear - blow smoke away from studio gear. profit.

Yeah i figured this, ever open your monitors? I had to on one, a month after i got em because one of my asshole brothers pushed in the cone cover. I haven't since and its a pain in the ass to do but after about a year of daily L's and having my speakers playing while I am smoking (I am assuming while they are playing, they suck in more smoke) I think i might have to, they are the behringer 2031a's and they have two slits in the front for the 8" woofer.

I'm on a laptop so i don't need to worry too much about dust build up in my PC. Although i do clean it out when my computer starts crashing when im using a lot of CPU.

Damn, if you're smoking so much its coating your electronics, i'd hate to think what your lungs look like. +1 for a vaporizer, or maybe make some cakes?

I second that, get a vaporizer! Unless you're shooting a rap video...then you need fat blunts and gold chainz.

smoke + monitors... whatever. for the most part monitors are really simple machines.

smoke + actual gear will really devalue your gear. that shit gets in and eats away at (and corrodes) transformers, cabling, solder, pots...

Sir, you must truly love your brother to tolerate his existence after committing such an act of barbarity. :Q:

10+ years of heavy smoking in my studio never affected anything......dust is more likely to cause problems.

Smoking leads to much more dust build up, like when the smoke particles settle. But good to know that you havnt noticed any issues.

Lol, my brothers (both of em) are dick heads. Its an eye for an arm with them...

Steal my bud.. Ill sell your xbox games..

Yell/curse/disrespect me.. We are fighting.

Fuck with my gear.. Somethings getting smashed, including their face...

They just dont get it though, and they both never admit to shit. But now I have a lock and key so it is no longer a problem.

+1 on vaping - Volcanos hit harder than bongs and yet your lungs clear up once you switch to 'em full time, makes the price more realistic. You can also make butter with the leftover vaped shake: for some reason it's just as potent. Saves money too.

Alternately, a good HEPA filter will help but not eliminate the problem.

I have been considering it. Just cookup a 6ft bag and your good to go

There's just something about L's, never smoked a cig in my life.. maybe i am craving tobacco after all these dutches. :dunce:

Or just getting a zip to make some hash.. Not much profit, but if you smoke a .3 of bubblehash or honey oil........... 8)

The 'cheese dust' covering some of my older hardware is actually the only thing keeping them together. So there you go, smoking weed in your studio actually prolongs the life of your equipment. Fact.
