Need Halp With Bass Pls - Space Laces

Post by Sechah » Sat Dec 01, 2012 11:44 am

So I would post this in the 'How To Make This Sound' thread but I'd rather not bump it.

Anyways, I'm looking for help on a particular sound made by an artist called 'Space Laces', as you can probably hear from a lot of his tunes he is very good at what he does and takes a lot of time to finish a song.

His basses have so much movement in them; it sounds like several different sounds when it's usually a maximum of 2.

I'm wondering, is this a shitload of FM modulation? Like is he modulating a bunch of operators at different rates and such on FM8/Sytrus? Or is he just a fucking god at good ol' Massive?

Here's some examples of the bass/basses:
Excision - X Rated (Space Laces Remix)

Lucky Date - Ho's and Disco's (Space Laces Remix)

Space Laces - Disco Bloodbath

And a song by Far Too Loud with a similar bassline;
Excision & SKisM - Sexism (Far Too Loud Remix)

So... Where in the fuck do I start with something like this?

Thanks in advance to anyone that helps, as I know asking shtuff like this is 'frowned upon' on here.

A lot of Space Laces stuff sounds better because of how it chopped and arranged rather than how it's made.

Also Disco Bloodbath sounds like he has ripped the bass from Skrillex's "Kill Everybody" and just chopped it up.

ALWAYS is about arrangement, like you said, it's how you chop it up.

I spent years working on synthesis only to realize that arrangement is really what makes a track sound amateur or pro.
