Post by AphoticSky » Tue Dec 04, 2012 5:55 pm

:t: Heey

So Ive been listening to dubstep and drum and bass since I was like 15 and I really want to start producing.
BUT I DONT KNOW WHERE TO START!!!

I literally have my bare computer. So Now I need you guys to help me and tell me what I need to get and what to use in order for me to start producing.
I dont want to a massive big set up as I can work my way up as I get better at it all.

Would really appreciate your help and advice guys.

>DAW (take your pick)
>Free samples (1000s of samples of every kind are littered across the internet - don't get dragged into buying "THE LATEST HARDCORE DUBSTEP FILTHY DRUM SET")
>Free VSTs/Plugins (Again until you learn your DAW there's no point buying "the latest hot synth")
>Some inkling of melody/song structure (not a hinderence if you have no musical talent, just helps if you do)

If I had a penny for every time I've seen this question asked... I'd have anywhere from 25-50 cents.

Well I am new so I wouldn't know...And I asked for advice, not a sarcastic comment about how many people have asked the same.

Thanks for the rest of you for your advice. :Q:

You're gonna need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to really start making music.

There's plenty to pick from, all do the same things in different ways. Every DAW is also gonna come with it's own set of synths, effects, etc.. but you can download other synths/effects that work in all DAWs.

I use FL Studio (which is fairly cheap for the highest version, and you get free updates for life, and comes with great synths, but it's PC only), but there's Ableton Live, Logic (MAC only), Cubase, Reason, and Reaper (Reaper is only $50 for a non-commercial license, however the demo is full featured and there is no time limit on it. It doesn't really come with any synths though, but loads of FX.) There's more than that but those are the big ones that come to mind.

Again, don't bother searching for which DAW is best because everyone is gonna be biased, and they are do the same thing, just how it's done is different.

Just try out the demos and see which one you like the most!

After that, get ready for months of learning your DAW inside and out.. :W:

Yeah think best thing to do is try a few demos and see which one I like most. I've heard quite a lot about FL And a few people I know have made really good tracks with it as beginners. :)

I use FL, only reason I chose it is because a few years back some guys I knew that made music it used it.
I tried Ableton but really cba switching DAWs, only reason I tried it was that my housemate used it lol.

Moral: Pick a DAW, learn it inside out, stick with it.
