Glitch Hop?

Post by MKRUGGER » Tue Jan 01, 2013 12:24 am

Oh, just kill me if this has been posted before.

I want to try my hand at glitch hop, but unsure where to begin? I've never tried it before, and I don't want to start off in the wrong direction..

I tried Glitchhopforum or whatever, but I don't see any tutorials?

Spoon feed me, bitches.

Make a hip-hop tune in your DAW. Bounce the loops down to audio, slice them up and edit them. Reverse/retrigger/comb filter automation/stutter/etc. Done.

It's in the name, really. Glitch up a hip-hop tune.

Probably not the best example, but stuff like this:

https://soundcloud.com/haywyre/contrast-preview#play

And this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3qfhTTJJCU

How do you get that off-beat kind of sound? :P

They all also kind of sound alike as well, like sound design wise.. It's sexy :D

Get off the grid with your perc.
Syncopate the drums and bass in a "call and response" style.

You kind of answered your own question there...try turning the grid off, experiment with swing and stick little "glitchy" percussion hits in here and there to get that kind of awkward, wonky sound. Something cool to throw people off would be to build the intro with a regular old drum pattern and then when the drop hits go into some trippy, wonky ass beat that changes every 2-4 bars for example.

But most of all just experiment.

I'M SCARED TO EXPERIMENT! lol..

I'll try.. I just feel like this is going to be an epic failure, lol.

Any more advice is appreciated ;)

Well for hats I usually open piano roll with a hat, make them as small as possible, cover over the entire 4 bars, and then take out a bunch of random ones to make this sort of stuttery/glitch sound of hats behind the classic Hip-Hop beat of Drum and Clap/Snap at around 82-110 BPM but honestly I think any BPM would do fine. It's really whatever.
And crunchy thick-as-fuck resampled filtered cut-up bass.
Like Culprate. That shit is THICKer than a brick!
Keep progressing, one day you'll be great. :)

If you struggle, import a track you like to your DAW, zoom in the waveform so you can see the drum hits (i.e. peaks), then replicate the pattern with your own drums. Then you can see how someone else has placed the drums, try and then recreate something similar or mess with the pattern you've made.

I suggest take a listen to what this guy produces, he is mainly into dubstep, however, his sound is swaying towards glitch hop with conscience and awareness, a true master of percussion wizardry and all around groovy sounds... I learn alot by listnening to his tunes... here is a new tune ... also listen to his other tunes you will find much needed inspiration for what you seek.
