Dustwyrm - Drop Dead /dubstep/

Post by Dustwyrm » Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:33 pm

Hey everyone - I've made a lot of changes and want to bump this post up for reviews. This is basically melodic dubstep hardstyle, it's kind of brosteppy for what it's worth.

Please take a look
Thanks

Soundcloud

Thanks for listening

I'm much more critical with my opinion on this particular sound nowadays, it's arranged well. I've listened to past tunes from you and you definitely put it down. This one is solid, I like the transitions and the synths. I guess the voice is necessary in context with the sound, but in my opinion it's overdone. It's distracting. Other than that, I gave it a few listens and I can tell you put some serious thought into the composition. Though you have your formula, I don't think it would hurt to invest a bit more time in considering the overall sound. Of course you don't want to add too much, but maybe a different synth to really add another layer of depth. Still, you put down some heat, and it's great to hear your work. Props for sharing.

Thanks AMG - That's a great critique and I really appreciate it. I do agree with maybe adding another dimension to give it some more depth and variety. I definitely have spent a lot of time on it and am continuing to work on it because I believe in the overall value of the tune (perceived value through rose colored glasses :) Hehe - But again thanks for your take on my work - It will be very helpful when I dive into it again tonight. As far as the voice, I can definitely understanding feeling that is overdone. Maybe I will have to remove some and/or replace with something different or a different melody or something. Will have to attack this and just experiment I suppose.

Thanks again man.

AMG - What do you think about removing it entirely from the breakdown in the middle? Do you think there are any obvious portions that can do without the vocal? I was experimenting with it last night; Maybe I need to find another vocal? What is your opinion if you don't mind.

I like the added touch of the vocal basically having a response to the sounds in your track. The concept itself is pretty dope. I think if you feel comfortable with the pitch of the voice (the cute kiddy sound) keep it. Maybe limit just how often the voice is used, and how many words are being said. Maybe it's just me, but I'm straining to understand what is being said when a full sentence is used. That detracts too much from the overall experience in my opinion.

True, I didn't initally intend a lot to actually come through as fully heard sentences. Now that you mention that I probably should because no one knows wtf it's saying heh. Maybe I'll work on subtracting some of the more random vocal parts and arranging the ones I want to keep so that its more audible and understandable. I do like the cute kiddy sound I guess, I'm kind of a sucker for trancey and nightcore type vocals with chipmunk sounding stuff, so it's more of a personal preference.

'That detracts too much from the overall experience in my opinion."

Thank you - This is important because I never would have thought of this as a detriment on my own. So I appreciate this commentary because it's probably how a lot of other listeners are feeling when they hear my song. I'm going to work on achieving better vocal usage tonight. I think I may need to drop the pitch on a few parts, which is going to take some bouncing because dropping the pitch on one part a lot is going to affect the entire song (at least in my experience in FL Studio and pitch). Little extra work but it's necessary.

For the record, I think the pitch of the voice compliments what you're trying to achieve. I just made a statement about it cause you offered the suggestion of finding another vocal, which I don't think is necessary. This track is kicking butt btw.

Thanks man - I appreciate the honest feedback and compliment of course and I'll use it for inspiration when I grind at it some more tonight.

I also did not forget your suggestion to possibly add another synth for variation. That one will be a little trickier but I'm gonna test some stuff. I'm also going to experiment around some chord arrangement on the 4th quarter portions that revert to the main hook (I'm really bad at describing bar location etc). This may give some more life to the track and improve it overall.

Dont know if anyone else has suggested this, but seems a bit crowded at the start, I wouldnt have put the sub bass in unti the drop and maybe have just the hats or more gradual drums... its good though :W:

Thanks man. Actually I'm glad you've stated, I was gonna do that tonight. I rendered the updates today and was rushed to get to my brothers bday. I totally forgot to silence the bass in the intro. Fail for sure heh heh. But yea I still wanted to post it up and see if anyone can help me make it better. Thank you for the comment man, anything else you think can be re-worked?

Edit- btw how do I get that black sound cloud player as you my friend? Looks sweet.

cool track, i checked out your soundcloud too. the main thing i noticed is i think you are over processing your sounds, try getting them more the way you want at the source. with the song you posted here it sounds like a ton of heavy eq and compression and it's sucking the life out of the song. the space you don't use is just as (and maybe more) important as the space you do use.

Thanks for the listen and help Andopolis - Would you say any specific area of the song is overly compressed, or is it something you've noticed throughout the entire song.

Let me know which area(s) you're referring and I will dive into this. Thank you for the help man.
