Is there a secret to EQing?
I've been in the process of making a electro/complextro/housey type mix but EQ is one thing i've never really learned how to conquer well. Is there something specific about it or is it just the synth is on the right side all the way up, kicks are on the left side all the way up, bass in middle all the way up..etc.. because i think my song sounds awesome and then when i throw drums in it it sounds like someone shit all over it. Can you take a look at my songs. I have them marked out. The first one with no eq [i don't believe so] is so far then so far far has a little eq and so farry has the most eq. The eq always takes out like 50% of my song and it sounds kinda blank and dull and very unprofessional

Re: Is there a secret to EQing?
You just need to learn how to use it man. Bringing frequencies down makes them quieter. Dragging them up makes them louder.

Re: Is there a secret to EQing?
EQing isnt difficult but tbh it does take a lot of experience to generally do it better (in my case i sucked at it for years)
you need to do a little bit of research but its mainly down to practice and always remember every sound is different so it has to be treated different. learn your tools! EQing is just one thing, panning and many other aspects are just as important.

Train your ears bud. Figure out what should be there and what shouldn't be there, and make room for other stuff in the mix. NEVER, i repeat, NEVER EVER solo your instrument while EQ'ing it, unless your shaping the sound rather than mixing down.
Re: Is there a secret to EQing?
your over complicating yourself man, just learn the functions of a eq, im shure there are vids on youtube that teach you about frequency spectrum, Dodge and fuski tutorial talks about it

I am wiling to bet that if you went to YouTube and typed in "eq tutorial" a lot of great info would come up. That is a guess, however I do know that the tutorial videos for fabfilter pro-q reveal various Eqing techniques that are commonly used. So if you can't find anything else (hardly imaginable) you could always start by watching those. The guy that does them is incredibly smart and articulate in his videos. Hope this helps you out.

And that when you do EQ, with many things gentle slopes, shallow notches and wide bandpass worth better than extreme cutting. Especially on organic samples (real instruments.
But really it's about picking/designing sounds so you don't even need EQ.
