Why the fuck haven't I learned

Post by Coolschmid » Thu Feb 21, 2013 4:09 am

Fucking third time its happened in the last few months, I'm messing around with some crazy fabfilter volcano action, a bunch of band passes with the resonance cranked all the way up and a little distortion in the chain. For some reason with these band passes you can put the resonance all the way up and not have it be loud, and the way I work is swapping things in and out, changing alot of settings on the fly.

Problem comes when I think HEY LETS MAKE THE HIGHEST FREQ BANDPASS ON THIS BITCH A HIGHPASS FILTER AND SEE HOW TIGHT THIS FILTER ACTION SOUNDS.

THEN HOLY SHIT ALL OF A SUDDEN OVER 9000 DECIBELS OF DISTORTED HIGHPASS RESONANCE STARTS SCREECHING THROUGH MY MONITORS. I FUCKING PUNCH THE STOP BUTTON IN MY DAW BUT THAT SHITS ON FEEDBACK OR SOMETHING SO I THRUST MY FIST THROUGH MY AUDIO INTERFACE AND DISINTEGRATE IT FROM THE INSIDE OUT. TOO LATE MOTHERFUCKER THAT SHIT WAS ON FOR LIKE FIVE WHOLE SECONDS. EARS AND MONITORS = RAPED.

I really need to have a limiter start on the master in my default project files.

So how do I tell if I damaged my speakers or something like that? I would try to listen for a difference but it sounds like I'm underwater.

Wait until tomorrow, check your speakers again when your ears have had their rest.

midi panic/mute keyboard shortcut? my daw stops delays with the panic button. or at least the mute button your keyboard? the limiter doesn't help much imo.

Limiter on master buss <- serious shit. Melda productions MMultiband Granular has a really nasty habit of spitting AAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH loud pops and spikes out like a dying banshee. First time it happened I thought I'd killed my monitors, since then I've had a limiter on my master buss as part of a project template.

And just, yeah, why would you want max resonance? In my experience it's never had any musical merit, like ever. Unless you like, recreationaly listen to feedback or radio static or some shit...

Loud ear raping noises happen to the best of us man. Honestly the best tip i read was about adding a keyboard shortcut for your midi panic button. Other than that, id never really recommend turning the resonance on anything to full/high amounts anyways. Maybe its a good idea when messing around with super high resonance settings to turn your volume down a lot more anyways.
My latest WIP (Feedback is GREATLY appreciated)

For you fucktards calling me stupid for using full resonance on the bandpass filters, the first section is how it sounds. The second section is what happens when I change one to a highpass, only 50x quieter. Its funny because it doesn't even need to be playing, its just a static noise.

are you using ableton? I got this a few times even just using the stock reverb. Couldn't find a solution apart from keep everything relatively quiet when mixing and also get a limiter on the master with -3db on it or so.
Ever since using Ableton rewired into Logic instead of mixing within Ableton this problem has never happened.

I actually think what you're doing is pretty 'effin dope; the clip you posted sounded really dynamic and quite pleasant to listen to, even if the method you used could just as easily produce sonic chaos!

From what limited knowledge I have on this subject, it looks like you are modulating the bandpass filters, which are quite steep (48db/octave), and when you engage the hi-pass filter (also steep, 48db/octave), bp filter #3 crosses into it's path, amplifying the signal to a point that causes self-oscillation in the plugin. At least, that noise at the end sounded like self-oscillation...

I also second the notion that you should be using a limiter on your master out.

Take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm sure someone more experienced will come along and give you a better answer.

whether or not you're using a limiter, isn't it still going to be the same rms, just different frequencies? your speakers won't be doing any less work. if you're fully clipping in digital, it won't get any louder.
You could use something that mutes or lowers the level if it goes over a threshold, like the opposite of a gate. I forgot what the name for that is because it's built into the gate in renoise. It would be so you're hearing what the gate is filtering out instead.

I guess I should clarify more. The first part isn't mainly resonance, it sounds normal due to the fact that for some reason you have to turn the resonance up all the way to only get a moderate resonance effect for the bandpass filters. That same setting when used on a highpass filter is just pure static resonance.

I think you mean an expander.
