If you want some serious bass I reckon there's 3 bass cabs you should be looking at. Firstly the 1850 horn with either a Precision Devices or Void 1000w driver in it, masses of punch and low end grunt but you need quite a few of them to get really low (I've got 8 looney bins which are variants on the 1850 design, look at Brightons "Dub-Pressure" night reviews to get an idea of how effective they are...). Next the LAB horn, alot bigger than the 1850, but if you want to seriously move people with the bass they're the ultimate choice. They'll go bellow 30hz if you have a few of them in a stack and very, very loud! If you don't want something as big as the LAB there's a box called the Punisher, which is designed by the same lot as the LAB I think, but only about half the size.
The placement of subs is critical in rooms, but you'll never make a rubbish sub sound good by putting it in a "special" place. As a general rule of thumb, the closer you put the subs to the walls the louder the bass will be. This is because the energy from the sub will be coupling to and using the rooms resonant nodes to make it sound louder, but not always better, its always best to experiment with where you're putting the box to get it sounding best

Mackie SWA1801 Powered Subwoofer (18 Inch, 900 Watts)
Want to add a serious amount of low end kick to your PA? How about an Extremely Serious amount of low end? You need to check out the latest sub from Mackie. The 900-watt, 18" SWA1801 powered sub features a high precision transducer and onboard active electronics. The SWA1801 is capable of up to 135dB peak output - truly extreme! It also features a sophisticated onboard control system allowing for flexible integration with active or passive full range or mid/high speaker systems. The input panel accepts line level input signal and has LOOP OUT connectors for signal routing to other devices. It also has HIGH PASS out connectors for connection to active full range speakers or amplifiers powering passive full range speakers. All signal routing is through XLR connectors in L+R stereo or mono. There is a phase selection switch and a recessed level control. The system features thermal protection for the power supply and amplifier module and also incorporates RMS limiting protection for the amplifier.
High Resolution Audio Reproduction
The SWA1801 does not behave like a typical 18" subwoofer manufactured by so many other companies. It has been designed using Mackie's belief that live audio subwoofers should focus on the character of the "attack" the device has. They have also focused their energies on the design of double horn loaded chambers to achieve a significant increase in output and lower distortion characteristics which lead to high resolution performance.
RCF Precision, the same company that provides high-tech compression drivers and woofers for high-end touring rigs like EAW's KF760, has developed a new woofer for Mackie's use.

The transducer used in the SWA1801 system features an RCF Precision 4-inch, inside/outside wound voice coil that offers extreme power handling capabilities. The magnetic assembly used features advancements in coil venting, composite polymide former construction, and structural cooling that provide lower temperature rise and substantially improved power compression characteristics.
The amplifier found in the SWA1801 cabinet is an example of application-specific amplifier design that can be exercised when designing active speaker systems. The system uses a proprietary high-efficiency, high-current amplifier designed to provide high current levels at all levels of operation. Having access to high current levels, no matter what the power output, is absolutely critical in achieving precise, total control of the woofer mass. This control is responsible for lowering audible distortion artifacts and providing aggressive attack through the operating band pass of the system. The amplifier, which is mounted on a large, finned aluminum heat sink, is rated at 900 watts RMS continuous output.
The cabinet is constructed using 18 mm thick multilayered birch plywood and finished in black splatter paint. There is one handle on each side for efficient loading and transport as well as a top, female pole mount fixture.
