Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs)?
Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs)?
Okay so I recently bought the CD of the Get Darker Presents: This is Dubstep 2011 compilation and was quite disappointed and surprised when listening through it to hear that some parts on some of the songs were missing on their respective track files due to have them having been mixed at the end of the previous track file. Now I'm not sure about anyone else but if I buy music of any kind then I expect and desire to hear each individual track in their entirety as the producer/artist meant for them to be heard and I had not encountered this on any other compilation CD I have purchased in the past.
I had noticed that the same thing had been done to the Sound of Dubstep 4 compilation CD by Ministry of Sound that i had bought about a month or so back and was just as disappointed and surprised then but I had put it down to the CD being distributed by Ministry of Sound and was something that they just do but I was even more confused when I had heard the same thing happening on the This is Dubstep 2011 CD. I had mp3s of TIS 2011 before that I had torrented and I noticed that some tracks were significantly longer on that version than the CD I had bought e.g. tracks started and went from their original beginning and end.
So the only thing I can put it down to is that different mediums give you different versions of the same content? At least in the case of music anyways. If this is the case then I feel very much cheated out of my content considering I payed roughly the same amount for the CD version than I would for an online purchase and had to wait for 3 days for it to arrive only to find out that I did not get my entire content! Or at least the content I assumed I was going to be getting.
I don't know if this is common knowledge that this happens and I'm just out of the loop in this case but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them and if they have similar sentiments to the whole thing?

Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Mixed version vs. unmixed version?
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
They've kind of (in my opinion) cut corners but doing the two at the same time; I still get to choose an individual track but it has been mixed in with the previous track at the start and the next track at the end. If there are those two different versions available then they haven't explicitly stated which is which. Not as far as I can see anyway.
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Surely Dubstep is designed to be heard mixed. This goes for all dance music really.Sioux wrote: I expect and desire to hear each individual track in their entirety as the producer/artist meant for them to be heard
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Lol, don't think you should buy mixed CDs in the future man.
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
I would agree if I were listening to dance music at a club/show but outside of these I prefer to be able to listen to them on their own, especially if I had paid good money for the privilege of listening to (or so I though) them as such.Surely Dubstep is designed to be heard mixed. I suppose that's kind of the problem bro lol I wasn't aware that it was a mixed CD as it wasn't explicit that is was. I know there are other compilations that have all the tracks as stand alone and then a mix split into two tracks at the end of the CD, I would have been a lot happier had I of been given those options to choose from.Lol, don't think you should buy mixed CDs in the future man.

tell me about it! i just bought dubstep allstars 2 and it didn't have the full length version of midnight on it! wtf!
you did have options, they were to buy the cd and get the mix or buy the download and get all the tracks plus the mix. check out what you're buying before you hand over your cash. it's perfectly reasonable for the two releases to have different content, this is dubstep 2011 would have to be on 5 cds for the unmixed tracks plus the mix to be put on cd instead of two for the mix. plus the release is the mix, the full length tracks are just a bonus when you get the digital as the tracks have already been licenced, so it makes sense to add them in to the download to boost sales.

Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
MoS, Getdarker etc have license all these tracks from labels / artists - some will allow the licensor to bundle full tracks with the download, others will not. This is why some of the tracks you illegally downloaded were longer.
No real mystery, just an artifact of how content is licensed.

Obviously there is no right or wrong when it comes to personal taste and how you want to listen to music. However, im guessing you dont have a long history with dance music. the vast majority of this sort of music is written with the express intention that it will only be listened to mixed, this really is an integral part of Dubstep/DnB/House etc music.Sioux wrote:I would agree if I were listening to dance music at a club/show but outside of these I prefer to be able to listen to them on their own, especially if I had paid good money for the privilege of listening to (or so I though) them as such.Surely Dubstep is designed to be heard mixed. You could just buy the tracks on their own rather than as part of compilations if you really do want to. Imo you would be missing out though...
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Yeah I understand what you're saying. Just something I had never come across before and went against my expectations which is what spurred the disappointment and confusion.timmyyabas wrote: you did have options, they were to buy the cd and get the mix or buy the download and get all the tracks plus the mix.
Hmm, that's something I (obviously) didn't know but cheers for explaining itthinking wrote: No real mystery, just an artifact of how content is licensed.

I have a "history" of roughly 3-4 years of listening to dance music but I've never really had any interest into deviling into the "intention" of its creation as I assumed it was done so as a stand alone piece of expression as opposed to whether or not it mixes well with other pieces of music which I would consider to be of secondary concern. That's just how I view art as a whole though so again it could just be the case of going against my expectations.dom wrote: However, im guessing you dont have a long history with dance music. the vast majority of this sort of music is written with the express intention that it will only be listened to mixed, this really is an integral part of Dubstep/DnB/House etc music.
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
you brought up the intention of the artist. I was just pointing out that it is likely that the music was meant to be listened to mixed.
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Did you not mean the intention of the artist when you used the word "intention" here?dom wrote: the vast majority of this sort of music is written with the express intention that it will only be listened to mixed
Meant to be listened to mixed in compilations or in general?dom wrote:I was just pointing out that it is likely that the music was meant to be listened to mixed.
Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
I did mean that but was responding to you saying "as the producer/artist meant for them to be heard" in your first post.Sioux wrote:Did you not mean the intention of the artist when you used the word "intention" here?
Both. compilation implies mix imo. I do want to reiterate what I said before though that if you prefer to listen to unmixed tracks that is completely cool - everyone is different. this is music designed to be mixed though.Sioux wrote:Meant to be listened to mixed in compilations or in general?

Oh okay, apologies for not picking up on thatdom wrote: I did mean that but was responding to you saying "as the producer/artist meant for them to be heard" in your first post.

Fair enough, compilation implies unmixed in my opinion so I guess we just differ on that. Yeah I'm completely in agreement with you there, whether someone prefers to hear dance music mixed or unmixed isn't right or wrong. I'm still unsure if I agree when you say it is "designed" to be mixed but at the risk of going in circles I think it may be best to just agree to disagree. The practicalities of having the unmixed tracks available to buy on CD and the way content is licensed (as explained to me earlier) leaves me less dissatisfied with the content I got on the CDs. Suppose I'll just go for downloads in future.dom wrote:Both. compilation implies mix imo. Re: Different releases on different mediums (Downloads + CDs
Pretty much every MOS compilation I've heard has been mixed. Most dance tunes are produce with the intention of being played by a DJ and so mixed. Hence intro's with just a drum beat etc.
