Technics 1210 needles question - URGENT

Post by low2low » Thu Mar 14, 2013 6:42 pm

So i recently bought some 1210s, one of the needles is working fine but the other one sometimes when i am cueing a record, especially when the song starts with bass heavy elements such as a kick drum, and the sound quality is generally lacking, especially in the sub bass department. The needle never jumps however when the song is playing, only when i am cueing it. There is a slight amount of distortion that is detectable in the bass when compared to the same record played on the other turntable.

So much question is: is this problem related to the stylus ( the tiny thing that clips on the headshell ) or the headshell itself, which is a lot more expensive to replace, or is there no way of knowing?? It is an Ortofon Concorde Pro-S.

Appreciate any thoughts/ideas!

Have you checked if the stylus is clean? Sounds obvious but you'd be surprised...

the first thing i would do is swap the headshells between the two record player to determine if the problem is the needle/headshell or the tonearm itself.

you will have to work backwards to determine where the problem lies. if you switch things around and the same deck keeps skipping you probably need to make sure you have the tonearm balanced. if you balance the tonearm and it's still skipping you could have a bent tonearm, or a bad tonearm bearing or possibly something wrong with the antiskate.

swap needles first, that should tell you if they cause the problem.
