Fun things to do when you're bored of producing.

Post by VirtualMark » Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:31 pm

Sometimes i like to mess around with my DAW - once in Ableton i created a set where i had delays feeding back into each other with different timing variations and high feedback. Then i sent a short blip of sound through it and listened while chaos ensued. Took about 5 minutes for it to build up fully. :)

Anyone got examples of extreme things you do when bored/experimenting?

Sometimes I set up a sampler and/or drum sequencer with a whole bunch of random shorts samples and feed those to a bunch of sends with %100 wet and fedback delays of varying times.
Each delay has a different combination of effects like pitch shift, automated reverb, automated delay ect....
Or other times I'll have one sample that I will endlessly mangle and just add effects, reverse, add more effects rereverse and bounce and repeat.

and i'll drink myself to death or at least i'll drink myself to sleep
and chainsmoke my way through the gaps in between my aspirations and my apathy.

When I'm stuck or becoming fed up with producing tunes I sometimes just have a sample fuck-upery sesh sort of like what you guys have said. When I'm in the middle of a tune it's not productive to go mad mangling stuff beyond recognition on the off chance of ending up with something usable. But going off to do it without restraints can be fun and also when something really cool rears its head it can provide inspiration for new tune ideas later on.

Or once I made a 'tune' based around samples of Frankie Boyle's best jokes. I suppose it's still producing but because I wasn't taking it seriously it was a refreshing way to fart about in my DAW, Was quite amusing. I've occasionally written comedic songs on guitar too. I recommend it for when you're frustrated or bored. Can't take life seriously all the time.

putting different sounds in a 4/4 and putting the tempo up to 999 or whatever, or getting songs you dont like and pitching the voices up so they sound like chipmunks- i got a couple of good voclas out of that b4

Make a synth that fits into a tune i like and then listen to it / to them if multiple tunes and play / jam along on the keyboard. It's fun

Switching random MIDI phrases around (hat pattern on a synth track, vice versa, etc, as nauseaum).

You'd be surprised at what pops up occasionally...

Some good ideas here!

Putting 5-10 dblue glitches in series and randomising them all can give some interesting results. Then bouncing it, pitching it and feeding it back through just to see what happens.

Weren't you the guy who was really hating on noise music in that one thread about some seattle noise documentary? lol
I like to make a pattern in renoise with just one note and then I make it to where it just holds that note forever by repeating only a fraction of the lines from the pattern by pressing enter and then I add effects and lfo's on almost every parameter and random lfo's and distortion, dblue glitch, dblue stretch, resonant filters and distortion, pitch shifters, ring modulation, scream filters, dc offset, etc. When doing this, I like to do the opposite of people's advice about not using every effect turned up to 11. Sometimes I just want to make somethign that doesn't make the same sound ever, but usually it ends up sounding repetitive at some point.
edit: Just opened up one of the ones I saved and no matter how many times I hit the panic button, it doesn't stop :corntard:

Yeah, I basically said that i didn't consider it music. The things i've suggested here were literally when i'm bored and wanted to mess around, but i'd point out that there's absolutely no skill in doing any of this. I'd suggest that true skill comes from creating a great song, utilising sound design and musical knowledge.

I can understand the fun those guys have, wiring that equipment up and making crazy sounds, and i wouldn't knock them for doing it. It's just that i have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to listening to music.

At one point in that documentary i remember a guy touching a wire on his tongue to create a mains hum, then screaming down a mic. Compare that to a singer with a beautiful voice who can hold a note and span multiple octaves - who has the greater skill? Anyone could do the yelling down a mic, whereas a very small amount of people have an amazing voice.

But yeah, don't get me wrong - it's fun to set up a massive effects chains and feedback loops and watch your system go into overload. I was clipping the shit out of my DAW when i did this and just wondered how far it'd go - it sounded like something was going to explode. I'd imagine it's more fun doing this with analog gear too as there's no hard clipping, no aliasing etc.
