Does this VST exist ?

Post by shakas » Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:39 pm

I'm looking for an XY / Morph pad VST that allows you to load a different sample and/or different synth into each quadrant and morph cleanly between them.

thanks.

Alchemy lets you morph samples, but to be honest the results are a bit shitty.

Prosoniq Morph also does it with samples, but it's Mac only.

I really like the idea of morphing from one sound to another and have been looking for a good way to do this for a while. I know it's possible with Kyma, but you'll need a couple of years to learn it, plus a few grand to buy it.

As far as i'm aware, all current morphing software relies on resynthesis. I.e it breaks down the sound into sines(additive) or into tiny parts(granular) or into frequencies(spectral) and allows you to morph by adjusting the parameters of the synthesized sound.

Couldn't you just use looping audio/midi and volume automation? Or are you wanting to do this live? Speaking of live...if you are using Ableton and Max I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Max4Live program like this.

I was also going to say Alchemy. VM, are talking about the snap shots or something else? I find the snapshots work pretty well and you can "Morph" between them. (I just started using Alchemy so I'm not sure).

Fragments - i'm not sure what you mean by snapshots?

Alchemy works by breaking the sound down into a patch, and as you can load 4 samples it allows you to fade between each patch. It works ok on some sounds but terrible on others. You have to mess around with octaves and settings to get a good result.

Volume automation is just fading/mixing, it's different to morphing. Think of fading between one image and another - you see both at once. Whereas the Terminator 2 effects are a good example of visual morphing, gradually changing from one thing into another.

There's some good examples and a long explanation here: http://www.cerlsoundgroup.org/Kelly/soundmorphing.html

thanks guys. hmm..too bad the alchemy one doesn't sound perfect. i might still give it a look. ....im not tryin to play it in a live setting...but i would like to record the morph automation live. I have done some time-consuming imperfect work around in ableton by sampling my synth patches and crossfading between all the samples in the arrangement. but i think it would give me more control or at least be quicker and easier if i could just swirl around a pad to do it.

Down in the right hand corner of the browser/simple mode there are 8 boxes labeled with the numbers 1-8. You can take "snap shots" different permutations of the same patch (diff parameters) and switch between them by clicking and dragging over top of them (also can be routed to midi controller like a mod wheel or knob).

I'd be willing to bet this is only available in the full version? I've been demoing it.

Huh. I guess I'm not understanding morphing then. I'll have to check it out in Alchemy.

fl studio lets u morph between samples/fl plugins if you use Layer. highlight the plugins and "set children" then set Layer to "crossfade". i use this feature a lot it works very well.

Alchemy's morphing squares work pretty well imo.

Are you sure it's morphing? Or is it just fading?

Not sure if you've noticed but every ableton plug has an xy pad which you can assign controls to. So I guess if you had two samplers in a rack you could morph between them? Possibly. I'm going to have a go now and let you know.

The xy pad only comes up for 3rd party plugs. Damn.

there is a big difference between fading between two sounds and true spectral morphing. I was working on an electroacoustic piece for college last year and I want to incorporate some spectral morphs into my work. from all the tools I used (random Max patches, Prosoniqs Morph and Alchemy) none seemed to give me the results I wanted.

our lecturer showed us some stuff he had done in Kyma and it was pretty insane. it actually sounds like one sound is turning into the next.

I've been looking for morphing software since reading this thread and have found an interesting idea here:
Hello
I posted this a few days ago in the harmor section of image-line:

"I have been able to get some interesting (if not usable) results using http://sqirlz-morph.en.softonic.com/
First export two images from Harmor (one for each sound I want to morph)
Then you load the 2 images inside Squilz
Place several control points on the images, and makes sure they are not at the same place on image 1 and 2 (that's the important part if you want the images to morph and not just crossfade)
export as an animated GIF
Load animated GIF in Photoshop (it should open each frame on a different layer)
Now the tricky part:
Delete 1 column of pixels on the left of layer 1
Delete 2 column of pixels on the left of layer 2
Delete 3 column of pixels on the left of layer 3
Etc...
When done, collapse all and save as morph image
Load back inside Harmor
Enjoy the probably weird creation"

Harmor is a great resynthesizer and it converts sound into image, so it's perfect for this task..
An interesting concept - using visual morphing software to morph a sound by converting it to an image. The only problem is that you need Harmor.

There's a straight up X-Y controller in Max for Live in Ableton 9, along with an LFO that can control any parameter.

this looked pretty interesting, i liked the eq morphing and the X/Y LFO...unfortunately it didnt sound like it was very smooth at morphing the full synth patches. i still might buy this though since its only $8 ...thanks.

i saw a video for prosoniq's morph too...i wish it was available for windows.

live 9 does seem to have a couple new things i could use.
