Getting nice distorted midrange under subscape style lead?

Recently I've been working on getting that subscape/zomboy eeerie "Ooooooooooh" lead bass sound used their drops.

I find I can get a very clean and clear sound straight out of massive, but it sounds very small because the unisono needs to be on 1 in order to get this sound.

I usually go ahead and compress, distort, add reverb and some delay, along with a sub layer.

This sound seems to reside primarily around 500-700Hz, and then the sub layer going along with the notes between 65-90Hz

This leaves this huge gap between 100hz and 500hz with little or no activity. And my result, this way too clean sounding lead over a very obviously separate sub layer. My first thought was to get a layer in those frequencies to add some meat on the sound.

All my attempts to layer some sort of distorted saw or square bass, so far pretty simple stuff, to thicken up the sound results in these AWFUL results, it's as if there are phasing issues going on that change the sound entirely into the terribly distorted and clicky sound.

Any suggestions? I can throw up examples if it would help.

I for sure see what you mean! I don't recommend layering bass's like that. But watch this video it saves me the explaining and it gives you a good visual idea on how to make a good "Mid-Ranger Bass" Then just try adding Multi-band Distortion, compression, ect. Mainly multi-band Distortion.
