Can someone explain sidechaining to me?

I'm sorta new to dubstep production and I'm working on a track, but it sounds empty. I googled this issue and found a post here from 2011, that said I could make the track sound "fuller" by using compression. I googled compression in ableton, and I learned how to sidechain compress, but I just don't understand its application in production. So can someone sort of do a "compress for dummies" for me?
