I always thought they used summed mono, which I think means left and right are summed to the middle rather than (mixed?) mono which disregards all stereo information. So your tracks should be alright on for example a club system unless you have terrible phasing issues in the mix. I'm pretty sure that's how it works, someone might wanna correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup, a lot of club systems are summed mono, of course I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is always the case, there are some stereo out there but make sure your mix sounds good in mono as well as stereo and you have nothing to worry about!

all the old dub n reggae sounds are usually mono, but a good up-to-date club pa (like void, martin audio, function1...) should definitely play stereo.
under 200 hz its usually mono because you will never find a record with a stereo signal below 200hz. thats because you can't cut/press stereo signals that low on vinyl an acetate without causing troubles...

The whole mono thing is a bit of a myth, most good sound techs I speak to run their rigs in stereo.

Mono is mono. Mixing is summing and mono is simply running the same signal through multiple speakers.

i dont know about all the daw's. but i do know that Cubase will merge the L and R channels while avoiding phase issues. Logic probably does too.

Yes, That's one of the main reasons (as it is the most extreme)

Other things that may become an issue when summing to mono include:-

-Level's a lot different to stereo mix
-Tonality being changed
-Reverb's/Delay's altering in level/ disappearing.

These are mainly based on phase issues and just like wide instruments being cancelled out are worth being aware of.

True, a lot of shows I play at are either Stereo, or Join Stereo... The whole mono thing is a myth, even though some shows do run that... I just run my tracks in stereo, so if there is a mono signal, it wouldn't matter...

So I started experimenting with turning my tracks from stereo to mono. Is it normal that the average dB drops slightly like 1dB? Or is it just how it's percieved because it's the same sound coming out both sides and you only hear it differently?
