Producers with rentals: How do you avoid noise complaints?
It's getting to be that time where some friends and I have steady incomes and are looking for appartments. My question to all you folks with flats, appartments, or town houses, is how do you avoid noise complaints from your neighbors? On top of that, there's also the subject of keeping your room mates happy.
We've always got those nights where you stay up to 3:00 am just making beats. Is there a certain time where you just switch to the headphones / turn down the subs?

Don't play your stuff too loud during the day and headphones from about midnight. Haven't had a complaint yet

A couple of options spring to mind:
1) Kill your neighbours. This will work until someone notices them missing and you'll eventually get new ones or end up in prison. So...
2) Kill everyone in the world.

midnght seems a bit late tbh. I go for 10pm being when i switch to heaphones- also i try not to crank the sub up too much, only when im really testing what the low end sounds like.Brothulhu wrote:Don't play your stuff too loud during the day and headphones from about midnight. all about being as considerate as youd like others to be to you imo

Seems like I might need to pick up a new set, my ATH-M50s are reaching the end of their life-span. I still probably have at least another month at my current place, so I guess I should take advantage that whenever possible. I'm going to miss it though, that's for surehutyluty wrote:I go for 10pm being when i switch to heaphonesBrothulhu wrote:Don't play your stuff too loud during the day and headphones from about midnight. I stop using my monitors at 10:00. Before that I honestly don't care.

My block is basically all students so 12 is fine, I'd probably switch at about 9/10 if there were a bunch of old people and people with kids next to mehutyluty wrote:midnght seems a bit late tbh. I'm going to really hope that doesn't happen. I talk to one of my clients on a regular basis, and she always mentions how small kids can be *extremely* stressful. And from how she describes it, if I were in her environment I'd flip if there was booming subs going on next door, regardless of the time of day.Brothulhu wrote:My block is basically all students so 12 is fine, I'd probably switch at about 9/10 if there were a bunch of old people and people with kids next to mehutyluty wrote:midnght seems a bit late tbh. Whenever I move somewhere, I always go round neighbours and introduce myself. Say what the deal is, what I do and when I do it. Then give em my mobile number. Music on headphones at 10. Apart from one odd couple who don't like my rehearsing in the garage 9 everyone is cool and it's easy to compromise to please everyone.

noise ordinance in my neighborhood is 11pm weekdays, no rules on weekends. My neighbors can fuck right off, i've had complaints while tracking guitars at 2 in the afternoon. basically came to "your neighbor plays guitar. get the fuck over it."

I'm a pretty introverted person so I most likely wouldn't go about doing this, but I would love to have a neighbor like you. I feel doing things like this would establish a lot of respect between everyone.pete bubonic wrote:Whenever I move somewhere, I always go round neighbours and introduce myself. I always have problems with this. I wish I can find a recluse hut and produce as loud and as long as my heart desires. But yeah. I dont give a fuck how loud I am during the day, but once it hits 8-9pm on any given day I tone it down. But sometimes on friday/saturday nights I blare til midnight

I was pretty introverted when I was younger, especially when blazing too much during the day. But yeah, the family to the left of my house are all musicians and I occasionally have a drink with the dad whos a guitarist. Always worth making the effort.Redderious wrote:I'm a pretty introverted person so I most likely wouldn't go about doing this, but I would love to have a neighbor like you. Doesn't always work out though, when I was Uni and moved into a place of my own with a few mates, our next door neighbours were utter twats. Their son was a drummer and used to hammer it out all the time, at first I was like cool, until they lodged a sound complaint against us, never even said hello. Not a word. And their son still hammering away on his drums. So I went round to have a word, they were so fucking rude, I think I called them a family of stnuc. Hatfield is full of utter ballbags.
