Simulating breathing through a gas mask...
Simulating breathing through a gas mask...
So, watching a Metro: Last Light gameplay on Youtube, I got the idea of creating a song that gives a feeling of despair, and in general, I love the heavy gas mask breathing. Any idea how to properly simulate said breathing with any form of noise and a bandpass?

I would think It'd be easier to just close-mic a small plastic container with you doing some Darth Vader breathing in it than try to synthesize it, but I'd start by just resampling 2 EQ'd white noise (2nd higher than the first) samples with the same sine-shaped ADSR curve on both.

I swear people are becoming too obsessed with synthesis on this forum and forgetting that you can sample and record sounds too... just sample a short clip from any game or movie video on YouTube where someone is using a mask, it'll be infinitely better than anything you try to make using white noise.

Would Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Scatta be as technically impressive as they are, if Skrillex simply used a random sound bite to simulate the growls?mthrfnk wrote:I swear people are becoming too obsessed with synthesis on this forum and forgetting that you can sample and record sounds too... just sample a short clip from any game or movie video on YouTube where someone is using a mask, it'll be infinitely better than anything you try to make using white noise.
You can never win on the internet. First it's people being flamed for using overpriced romplers and eschewing synthesis, now it's the complete opposite. Can't we just let each other be? He didn't ask whether he should sample or synthesise, so fuck that.

That's a very exaggerated example. I never mentioned sound design isn't important, in certain cases (read: bass design) it's paramount .GenericNameHere wrote:Would Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Scatta be as technically impressive as they are, if Skrillex simply used a random sound bite to simulate the growls?mthrfnk wrote:I swear people are becoming too obsessed with synthesis on this forum and forgetting that you can sample and record sounds too... just sample a short clip from any game or movie video on YouTube where someone is using a mask, it'll be infinitely better than anything you try to make using white noise.

But for something organic like breathing - why try to simulate when a sample would sound so much better, and in fact real? Why force yourself down the long winded route to achieve a sound that probably won't be as realistic and organic as foley recorded from the real world - note I did mention he could record himself, where's the problem in that?
Would Skrillex's tracks be as good as they are if he himself hadn't used 100s of samples along with synthesis?

Re: Simulating breathing through a gas mask...
I would record myself breathing into something, but my friend has my mic and I doubt I'll be getting it back any time soon.
I would sample a character breathing from Metro 2033 or Last Light straight from Youtube, but there's always someone talking over it and strings and whatever else, so, yeah.

Use a phone or laptop mic to record yourself?sofarmusic wrote:I would record myself breathing into something, but my friend has my mic and I doubt I'll be getting it back any time soon.
