Underexposed movie recomendations

Post by leyenda » Sun Jun 09, 2013 4:27 pm

This is a thread for any film that you think deserves more recognition whether it be a modern cult movie or a foreign language classic. I'll start by recommending:

Image

Hanyo a.k.a. The Housemaid. - A 1960 horror/thriller film from Korea. This one really gets under your skin and is constantly deviating from the immediate direction you think it's heading. I'd like to pretend the epilogue at the end didn't exist though.

Yeah big up Jesus for dying for our sins and netting us a public holiday in the process.

Also, hot cross buns.

R-Point

Group of Korean soldiers are sent to investigate a radio transmission from a supposedly lost unit. A cross between The Shining and Platoon, beautifully shot and great locations.

I'm not great with super obscure films but if it's films that are 'unknown to your average punter' then I have a few recommendations..

Rope
Image
Two young men strangle their "inferior" classmate, hide his body in their apartment, and invite his friends and family to a dinner party as a means to challenge the "perfection" of their crime.

I really like this film but it didn't do as well as Hitchcock's other films partly because 1948 America wasn't feeling the homosexual subtext. It's made up of ten very long takes that are broken up by the camera being obscured by an object. This makes the film seem to be one long take.

I believe the intention was to make it one take but camera's simply couldn't film that long in those days? I mean in the sense that if it was possible he would have done it that way.

Anyway this is a sweet thread. I'll try think of something appropriate to post. Don't think people will like most of what I watch a lot of the time though so it might take a while.

Sick film, the ocean crossing scene is amazing.

Not exactly unknown, but gets my vote:

Ah, I did not know that!

Yeah i'm a big fan of Chungking Express. Had it taped off channel 4 from years ago but just recently got it on blue ray. Beautiful film.

Come and See is on my list but I have to be in the right mood/state of mind for (potentially) harrowing war films with subtitles.

To be honest I only heard that from one review. Might not be accurate but it would make sense as to why the cuts are like that in it

Yeah Chungking is a good one. For me 2046 is the most beautiful, visually speaking.. The cinematographer he works with is incredible. Christopher Doyle (just googled it :P)

@Wolf - actually, thinking about it, if it had been done in one take, wouldn't the actors have to absolutely nail it with no mistakes? Seems hopeful.
@Imami - I haven't seen 2046 yet. Looking forward to it though! :W:

OK this isn't that obscure but it certainly deserves more recognition outside of the film community.
Peeping Tom
Image
It wasn't received at all well in the UK which all but ended the career of director Michael Powell. It has many similarities to Hitchcock's Psycho (which came out three months later) - both about a serial killer with parental based obsessions - but has forever been overshadowed by it.
It has since been re-evaluated and is now on all kinds of 'greatest films' lists but, imo, still doesn't get the respect it deserves.
It's better than Psycho and you know how people juice themselves over that!

- "Peeping Tom is a chilling, methodical look at the psychology of a killer, and a classic work of voyeuristic cinema."
That, basically.

Same as Laszlo, not really big on obscure films and I consider these underexposed because they're rather old and slip under the radar of a lot of people, but in the history of european cinema they're classics
Image

Teorema (Pasolini)
Young man comes into the life of a family and disturbs the balance of their apparently respectable household both sexually and spiritually. Most people hold Salo againt Pasolini, arguing it's too violent and senseless. For me Teorema is his best work with just enough unrest and social insight throughout the movie without making you sick and while being much more subtle than Salo.

Image

8 1/2 (Fellini)
Depressed movie director takes refuge in his imagination while everyone around him is trying to get him to finish his last movie. You can tell the Fellini-Mastroianni duo has some kind of alchemy, like Anderson and Bill Murray or Grey and Phoenix.
