Noob but technical question/collab

Hey all,

Been a live musician all my life and started getting into EDM. I'm digging Knife Party and Skrillex and looking to not sound or replicate those artists but produce in their style. I have a bit of my own style being fleshed out and would love to learn like the pros. Another words, don't just respond by saying experiment or trial by error. I would also be interested in collaborations to help gain some priceless experience.

I'm also willing to pay someone for lessons or guidance/technique suggestions/taking me a bit under the wing.

To hear how I'm progressing. But really I need tons of help to get there. Been doing this 3 months and loving electronic music. Also just started toying w resampling. For some reason I have a feeling that's what these artists are basing it on.

Howdo these guys get that visit out of control sound but w maximum control over it? A la skrillex "bangarang".

I would also like to point out that I don't really know where to go as a learning resource. some people say do online tutorials and classes, etc. but then I read that they are mostly a waste of time...but then where do I turn for learning the ropes? Engineering, EQ, Wobble, automation, chopping, resampling, etc.

I get more frusturated and pissed off and usually give up before anything successful happens.

Read the production Bible sticky. Use wikipedia to look up terms you don't understand. If you still don't understand keep reading, then read it a second time. I learned through a combination of reading and twisting knobs and listening to what they do to the sound and taking notes on that. Honestly, most of the basic concepts are simple in theory, getting them to sound good in practice...takes practice.

Automate everything, be real precise about it. Learn a couple of synths inside out, don't overcomplicate things at first. Each time you add an effect make sure it has a positive change on the sound.

Just checked your stuff - sounds nice and musical but a bit flat at the moment as far as mixdown goes. That'll come with practice - keep at it! You've got some good ideas there. It just takes time to develop your ear and get everything sounding punchy and clear.

Honestly, I'd trade music experience for technical skill in a heartbeat. I'm the opposite - always been science and technology minded and only taken up music in the past 2-3 years. So the music side doesn't come naturally to me, but I found the software side fairly easy to get to grips with. But I wish I'd played an instrument when I was younger.

well, in all honesty I wasn't expecting to be great after 3 months. But better than what I currently am.

Thanks VirtualMark - I'm working hard at it. I'm really thinking this is more a practice makes perfect. It's just so subjective when learning this type of music. When live recording it's so easy to pickup a guitar and track something worth keeping in 1-3 takes. This is so much more time consuming and can be extremely monotonous. I think maybe I'm just not used to making music in this fashion. And also, everyone...I mean EVERYONE has a different way of doing things - so I guess i'm asking:

How do you guys go about doing what you do: A LA - wobbles, EQ, compression, arranging, complex synth/bass lines, resampling...

That's way too much for anyone to post here. Go read the production bible and when you have more specific questions come back to us, eh? If you know enough to ask about those particular items, you'll probably learn a lot from that reading.

Seamless tutorials in youtube and this forum are the "production bible" for this more edgy, pop/commercial sound you are looking for, man knows his sounds. But 3 months in, you still got a long way to go, so sit tight and enjoy the ride, don't try to put the chariot in front of the horses. Just read this forum, focus on the old threads (some gems from back in the day) and keep producing. Shouldn't be worrying about putting up tunes or aliases on the internet for now. This is the best advice I can give you.
