Your partner is pregnant...

Post by wub » Fri Jun 14, 2013 10:51 am

You're about to have your first child. You get a test done, and it says that your child will have severe down syndrome. It's still early enough to abort the pregnancy.

Would you abort or not? Why?

Downs syndrome is not the end of the world and it's still possible for the child to lead a fulfilling life, bringing up a child with disabilities can be difficult but it also provides many rewarding moments.

If I wanted a child anyway I would keep it, however, if I was unsure which decision to make it may swing my decision in the other direction.

Tough question to think about, let alone make the decision in real life.

Brutally honest, if my opinion mattered at all, I would abort the shit out of it because i'm selfish and cannot afford (time or emotional strain) a kid with disabilities.

This, albeit small, possibility is one of the (many) reasons I do not want kids. Fuck finding out you've got a disabled kid and your wife/gf saying 'i'm keeping it'.
Long.

No disrespect intended to anyone with a disabled family member/friend.

I'd abort regardless of disability. Too young and got too much to achieve before I have a kid, let alone one with Downs. Thats life over.

Reckon my mum would never talk to me again tho.

Of course. I always assumed these 'icebreaker' type threads was part of his responsibilities as a mod.

Either that or he thrives on conflict and negativity.... I choose to believe the former.

Abort whether healthy or not right now, but yeah, uhh, probably abort.

It wasn't Downs, but a friend had a similar decision to make recently. Can't imagine a worse conversation to have with someone you love.

I'd get my lawyer on the phone immediately, go on a 3 week crystal meth binge and write a groundbreaking debut novel à la Bret Easton Ellis
