Being not born before the 80's really bums me out on this.

Alright, so I posted a thread maybe a month or two ago asking about how to make detuned 80's sounding synths (extremely n00b question, amiright?). Well, it's clearly very simple, and I know how to make said synths, but they always sound so shitty. I try to recreate Com Truise's synths every now and then to see if I can come close and learn from the patches, but everything sounds like shit. Either the synth is too spread out, or it's too thin, or it's falling apart before I even get started. I can't make anything that sounds 80's, literally. The other day, I came across some guy's channel that recreates Com Truise's tracks off of Galactic Melt and gets extremely close, but for one, he uses Ableton for the remakes, and I use Reason (Com Truise also uses Reason), and two, since he uses Ableton, he uses Mono/Poly, which Reason doesn't have (except for Polysix, which I can't afford, and I used the demo about 4 months ago). Help a fellow producer out and help me understand how to make rich sounding synths that sound like Steve Miller shitting out a full synthesized song. I'm also not looking for the answer "just use what's in the synth itself". I tried that multiple times, and it didn't work (for me). :u:

I've said this before... Com Truise is literally the stupidest name ever. :x

It sounds like you're lacking fullness to the sounds. There's no secret to "80s synths", aside from the fact most (from the 80s - not modern remakes) are analogue based and use basic waveforms - square/saw/sine.

Take from this three things:
- Try using a VA or likewise synth, ACE, Diva, LuSH-101 might suit your needs
- Make your sounds multi-layered: bass, midrange and treble, add stereo width accordingly
- Keep your patches simple

If you're really stuck maybe just go invest in a vintage synthesiser?

Actually I just listened to his stuff on SoundCloud and noticed 2 things: firstly a lot of stuff is massively detuned (layer or use multi-timbral synths and detune to fuck) and secondly a lot of the sounds themselves sit in distinct frequency ranges, actually some of his leads sounded thin imo but whatever.

I know you have. And some of his synths do sound fairly thin, but imo, they sound like just the right amount of thin. When I said thin about the synths I come up with, I mean like really tinny and bad. And thanks for the help mthrfnk. You haven't failed to surprise me yet. :corndance:

I like Mord Fustang's stuff a lot - and his name is quite easy to say. There's some about "com truise" and "vodge diper" which doesn't flow right when you say them.
