Dim Lighting Sparks Creativity

New German research finds a darkened room encourages freedom of thought and inspires innovation.

There are certain times when you want the lights turned way down low. One such time, according to recent research, is when you need to think creatively.

“Darkness increases freedom from constraints, which in turn promotes creativity,” report Anna Steidle of the University of Stuttgard and Lioba Werth of the University of Hohenheim. A dimly lit environment, they explain in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, “elicits a feeling of freedom, self-determination, and reduced inhibition,” all of which encourage innovative thinking.

Kinda validates the fact that all my best musical ideas come late at night.

I thought people already knew that sensory deprivation causes other neurons in the brain to over-fire and thus stimulate creativity? Or did I just make that up? :?

I can right music best at 2am onwards for some reason.

I also get the weird urge to turn the lights off if I'm sat down listening to something particularly sonically pleasing on headphones. Sometimes wonder if that's to do with distractions from the sound by other senses or the fact I have a kind of synaesthesia.

I get most of my creativity before I fall asleep or just some days in a row where I'm practically HAUNTED by songs in my head. Will have 30 second tune ideas on loop for an hour or two. Get that during sleepless nights as well. Tend to move around and jitter like mad too.

Yep, it's why we subconsciously close our eyes when thinking hard.

When your brain experiences a "Eureka!" moment, it's seemingly the result of all the senses blipping off for an instant... the resulting idea can feel like it came from nowhere or divinely, but it's just that the brain has a natural turbo setting which requires you to be senseless! 8)

Wordsworth agreed, too.
