You should never need to use one in production.

If it's got "Akai" written on it then it must be good. Again, hardly ever used.

Edit: actually that's not true, I use it a fuckload when I'm working with breaks rather than individual hits.

How does it actually work?

Does it just mean you can be more specific in which frequencies you actually compress? Never used one myself...

a multiband compressor gives you control over individual frequency ranges like...

Low / Low-Mid / Mid-Hi / and Hi

versus compressing your whole track with one setting, you can add different levels of compression to each range

I cannot remember the last time i used all of the bands on a multiband comp,I may use one band to de-ess or whatever but to use all of the bands generally means that it is a salvage job(Salvage meaning another mix is not possable and the label/artist needs that mix rescued)
When producing a track you have acces to all of the individual channels why then would you need a multiband compressor? I do not understand

we can go around and round about this

adding some compression after the final mix is beneficial to most

if your mixdowns are THAT perfect...

I'll be impressed

EDIT:

I agree with the "salvage job" outlook

I mainly use a bit of bass boost as well as some mid-hi and leave the rest of the freq's alone

Using a multiband compressor on the final mix can restrict my job.I agree that a normal comp is a very valid and important tool when used properly.
I rarely mix tracks anymore but when i do I do not use a mb comp.

Only joking, there's people out there that actually need to use them, for mastering stuff (that I have no idea about). bedroom producers dont really need em.

i have, in the past, commonly used a multiband compressor as an effect (because i didnt know what to do with it)

but i usually used it to expand one particular frequency band until it distorted whilst compressing the rest out of existence

They can be really useful for tightening up the overall sound of DJ mixes.

Just the thing for a bit of home mastering for a digital release. How come the PSP Vintage Warmer isn't there. I thought everyone and their mum used that one.
