How to make a Kahn new grime sounding 808 style bass?

Post by Sheds » Sat Jul 20, 2013 4:47 pm

I've been trying loads of different techniques, adding different stuff to an 808 bass, but it never feels as heavy and raw, but still futuristic and new as the Kahn and Wen kinda basses

Anyone got any idea on how to make these kinda basses and what to add to them?
I use ableton

examples:
Kahn & Neek - Percy

Kahn - Fierce

Wen - Nightcrawler

there's a million examples of it

Take an 808 kick drum. Clip it wayyyyyy over 0 db. Resample. Depending on your DAW, you might have to tweak a few things in order to maintain the distortion from the clipping while bringing the volume back down below 0 db.

You can take the resampled kick and jack the volume up again and do another resample, adding another level of distortion. You can do this as many times as you need.

Or you could try and sample from one of kahn's songs....

Also try making an 808 in massive (billions of tutorials for this exist) then use the hardclipper effect. This gives you more control over thing like the envelope

Basically what these guys said.

In ableton use the saturator, stick it on waveshapper and go nuts. Resample and bingo.
