Vocal extraction processing.

Post by Crimsonghost » Thu Aug 01, 2013 11:43 pm

I got my acapella the best i can with a bootleg instrumental (thats sounds pretty good) and my original track. Im just wondering what type of processing you would use after that to try and make it sound better. Currently, its not bad, but its definitely lost some weight. Also, since it wasnt an official instrumental i still have a little of the instruments in the background.

Im getting somewhere using S1's multiband dynamics (a multiband compressor/expander). But since ive never done this before, i figured id ask.

Unfortunately as far as I know man there is really nothing you can do about it besides EQ'ing, which is probably not gonna do much. I'm assuming you did the phase inversion technique to get the acapella? If so, you really need to get an official instrumental version in order to not get some background noise.

Even still, a lot of times the instrumentals won't phase cancel perfectly because of the master chain. Any non linear processing like compression won't sound the same without the vocal to key it.

Best bet is probably multiband downward expansion, and slathering it in processing afterwards.

Yeah, thats kinda what i figured. I know its never going to be perfect but i was just wondering if there was something i was missing. At the very least this will be a pretty good test of my skills.

Well see what happens.
