Eptic's Unique Sounds

Post by Spread The Word » Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:46 pm

I would like to begin a discussion on Eptic's synths he uses for his drops. Here are some examples, in case you don't know him yet...

In this song I espacially like the synth at 0:59

The synth here is the yah bass at 0:29

Here it's the high pitched synth at the beginning of every beat as well as the wobble

Here it's the wobble as well

If there already is a discussion about that, then write the link in the comment as I don't want to start a discussion, which already has been made.
His sounds sound as if they were made in massive, but what is it, that he adds? I don't want a whole tutorial on those basses, but simply some tips! :D

I don't know how he does it, but I just wanted to my opinion forward, his sounds are some grade a shit, absolutely crazy good, I can't get enough of it, it's like 8-bit dubstep, mario on acid, sonic on speed, spyro on ketemine that kinda crazy, I can't get enough of Eptic, nobody should make his sound and just let him make his sound, he's a damn fine producer :Q:

It was actually kind of tough :P
NI Massive

Osc 1:
Pitch = 0
WT = Arctic (Bend -/+)
WT-Pos is at 1:30
Intensity is 100%
Amp is 100%
Route to Filter 1
This higher pitch will give you the crunch, you'll understand later.

Osc 2:
Pitch = -36
WT = Sine (Spectrum)
WT-Pos is all the way left
Intensity is 100%
Amp is 100%
Route to Filter 1
Just for you sub

Osc 3:
Pitch = -24
WT = Sine (Formant)
WT-Pos is all the way left
Intensity is 100%
Amp is at 1:30
Route to Filter 1
This will give you nice distortion when you phase it.

Mod Osc:
Pitch = -12
Phase on Osc 3
Phase is at 9 o' clock

Next, set F2 to serial.
I used a comb filter (very lightly) and a...
Scream Filter:
Cutoff at 55% with a LFO on it going all the way til it hits the end.
Scream is at 1:30 to 2 o' clock
Res is at 10-11 o' clock.

Now add in 2 Parabolic shapers in the Insert FXs bringing all 4 of the knobs to 45%.

Voicing - I did 4 voices with monophonic turned on and pan position 1/4 from the left. Legato Always.

Teletube as FX 1, both knobs at about 40%.
Dimension Expander - Dry/Wet to 40% and Size at 0%.

EQ a boost in the high shelf to about the 1:30 area.

There ya' go. It's a fancy patch that I don't know how I came up with :P Distortion on sine waves (and formants) is a sexy trick to making sweet sounds.

(I just remade the patch following these instructions. There are some very slight tweaks to get it to sound like mine, but that's a good thing. Now you're kind of forced to make it sound like you want it.)

Thanks!
Looking forward to trying this out when I get off work, did you know how the oscilators would sound together when you did or did you just experiment (trial & error)? Cause I just usually just do T&E until I get something I like, but patches like that don't seem to be a product of random button pushing. :lol:

what usually happens with me is I understand what I want and how to make it, but along the way I do something and notice how the sound is changing and change it to sound that way instead :P I often tell people that sound design is about understanding everything, but fucking around in your synth too.

Sorry for not answering for a day, I have been busy all day. Glad to have showed you a new producer & as I said, I don't want his sounds, but know what he does to make it sound different than any other dubstep producer. :P

I have made the sound, and I have now changed one of the inserts to a hardclipper and put the dry/wet slightly above 3 o'clock and the drive around 45 %. Thanks awfully & I well carry on making sounds with this patch :D !!!

YAY! For fucking around :W: will try out this patch later. If you want to make some sick yoy basses use the scream filter. Always granted to find something unique, took me awhile to figure that out. The rest of his synths are pretty basic, sounds like square and saw waves to get that gritty 8 bit sound your talking about. Some sick crazy leads like Flux and doctor P Really simple but i have no clue to make lead as basic as theres pack a really big BANG.

I played around with someones patch from the thread "Eptic is a BOSS" and it was just a saw and square oscs distorted with a scream filter. Got ok results following his instructions, but you can easily get his sounds with the basic waves and some distortion.
